My use is more insidious and lazy. Our family office is downstairs at the south side of the house. The master bedroom is upstairs at the north side. I've recorded a series of "Kids, time for bed," "Son, come here, I need you for a minute," etc., soundbites in Garageband, and exported them to iTunes. Now, when I need them, I can summon my progeny through my remote Mac from the comforts of my bed.

Pathetic, yes. But way geeky cool.

Internet radio! I created a playlist in my iTunes library called Radio Stations, then pulled down my favorite streams from Apple's "Radio" library--as well as some other internet sources that stream to iTunes--and now I can open the Remote app, go to my Radio Stations playlist, and stream internet radio throughout the house!

I have found that with remote I can now do something with Airtunes that I could not previously do.
Change the volume level.
With my macbook I could play tunes remotely before but I had to manually go to the room that had the music amp and dial in an estimated listening level of sound then perhaps even return to tweek it. Now I can do so from remote on my iPod Touch. Not only that but by having separate airport expresses, I can change the music in differing environs. Very functional.
AND IT WAS FREE.

That's a brilliant idea! I've always wondered if I could get the internet radio stations to play via the Remote app. Thanks!

Good article, but what is long overdue for those of us who have been utilizing this type of set-up since the first airport express is a review of quality self powered speakers for use with airport express' that are utilized for music as opposed to the typical offering of "computer speakers."

Any speaker review done by Macworld has involved discussions of audio quality, including music. Here are some links for you:

remote works with air tunes and movies/video on apple tv as well! talk about a centralized entertainment system. eurekabrowncoat could shoot video of him/herself telling the kids it's time for bed, and have it pop up on the large screen tv in the family room. wow! big brother IS watching...

The Remote app is one of the best software programs from Apple. I never considered an AirPort Express with AirTunes before the Remote app because it wasn't convenient due to the lack of control of the music from the room that you were listening in. Why stream music to another location when you didn't have control? So when the Remote app arrived, I went on eBay and bought two used Airport Express base stations for $50 each. One in the garage, and one in the living room. I have recently added another one to the stereo in the bedroom. So now when I have people over, they are amazed that I am streaming music around the entire house and controlling it with the iPhone. I play the music in the living room, the bedroom, and the office (with HK SoundSticks on my Mac) and they are amazed that each stereo is playing the same music. Most inexpensive way to have "whole-house" audio.

While an iPad version that uses the larger screen to allow for more options and information would be nice, the current version of the Apple Remote works fine on an iPad. In fact, because it can the higher speeds of 802.11n, I find that startup and connection to my iTunes library is instantaneous compared to the delay using my iPhone.

Good app, but could be better..

It would be great if you could go into the settings and select if you want the volume of itunes to mute or volume cut/dim 10% - 90% etc when the phone rings.

At the moment you can't then turn the music down because the new call overrides the app. Then once you hang up, itunes slowly fades back up to the last volume prior to the call.

This would be a very simple fix, no more than 30 minutes to the clever people who designed it!!

I would even pay for this extra!!

I am a person that listens to classical music only; how can I get to play ONLY the "song" (which could be a one hour piece) that I select without having to shut it off before it immediately goes to something I do not want to hear? It seems to be such an easy task, but I do not know how to implement it. As it is now, iTunes is totally unusable to me. Any suggestions?
