"the new Mac mini comes in a single $699 non-server configuration that offers a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor"

There is also a 2.66 GHz option available.

That's really a BTO option, not a standard config.

There's only one non-server model, although there is a build-to-order processor-upgrade option. Updated to clarify.

Just curious about that Handbrake time. If we assume that is some sort of glitch that will be fixed with a software update, how much would the overall score change if the Handbrake time was in line with the other tests? Would it be enough to push it over the '09 2.53 model?

This is typical Apple.

Make the price less competitive and produce a product that is like the curate's egg: good in parts, bad in parts.

As ever it leaves me looking at it and going "Wha…?"

I can see its potential, something Apple keeps skirting around with creeping progress. Apple needs to get serious, drop the AppleTV and make the Mac mini a full on Entertainment Centre without restricting file usage and being able to easily grab and manage free to air material. Free content/time management is the only thing that would compensate for the unrealistic price.

As it stands it has only one desirable feature. It is small. The offsets of over the top pricing and functional shortcomings are too big to over-rule the cuteness factor in my book.

What is video editing like on one of these things? I can't imagine it's too great with the internal 5400RPM drive, but what about when booted from or using a FW800 external drive?

Right away everyone always rips on the mini because of price. I purchase and set up desktop PCs at the company I work for (15 years). Just finished with a HP pro 3000 which is in the price range of the mini. The HP is junky by comparison. Large foot print, flimsy case & front bezel, no Bluetooth, no wifi. I think the real estate saved on a desk is worth the little bit of extra money for the mini. After this last purchase, I have been looking to find last generation minis to put Windows on and it seems as though inventory has dried on those models.

The European price for the Mac mini is juist ridiculous.
Apple is asking 799 euros for the simple model.
That's about 985 in US dollars :-)

Check out the Dutch store, for example:

I'd love to upgrade, as I own the early 2009 model, but the price they're asking just makes me laugh. And cry a bit, too.

Eh if you don't want a mini-computer then yes it is over-priced. But it is not any more over-priced than any other Apple product. IT's not like Apple is planning to make twice the margin on the Mini than they do with the iMac or MBP either.

YOu're paying for a tiny compact yet quite powerful computer at a normal Apple markup.

Don't want it? Get something else. Otherwise pay up.

Wouldn't it be more accurate to compare the 2010 Mac mini with the faster 2.66GHz processor to the upgraded 2009 Mac mini with the 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo, since they both represent the top available processors on the machine for their two respective years?

Also, would the new mini with either the standard 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo or the 2.66GHz processor, and the 5400 rpm hard drive be suitable for working with QuarkXpress and Photoshop Elements? I recognize I'd need at least 4GB of RAM with either configuration.

I'm just about to get my hands on one.I custom ordered one fully loaded:

2.66ghz core dual
8 gb of ram
500gb HD serial ATA
Superdrive 8x
UPS says it is now in Louisville KY (3 days now)
Supposed to be in Toronto today for delivery tomorrow to me.
Can't wait to test the HDMI direct connection to my 32" Panasonic LCD TV.
I have a black MacBook, and connected it to the TV and got a decent picture,(finder and all).
But I had to go from the Mini video out thru a DVI adapter, then another DVI to HDMI adapter.
I will be using my 22"Samsung LCD monitor most of the time for other work than video.
The main reason I bought this unit is for portability with power inside.
