It's a waste of money and valuable resources!
Why buy this CR*P when the nano is available!????

It's $49. It's sturdy. It's a good device for kids (because you won't care quite as much if they lose one versus a nano). It's a great lightweight iPod for workouts.

You bike and listen at the same time?!
No wonder drivers are NOT happy sharing the road with bicyclists.

Please let me offer condolensces on behalf of the community for the fact that you were apparently forced at gunpoint to buy a shuffle. I assume that's the case, rather than just that you've decided that a product that has no appeal to you cannot possibly have any value to anyone else. No one could be that self-absorbed, after all.

I think the main gripe is that you can't use it with any random pair of third-party headphones (e.g. the $300 high end ones you bought or the cheapo low-end ones you want to use in a pinch because you forgot/can't find the Shuffle ones).

As for the "hated" third generation, we have one and it is just fine without buttons. But losing the headphones would be a drag, granted.
