It seems rather lame, that after all this time, iTunes still doesn't support multiple selection of playlists for organizing into folders. The Doug's AppleScript to help do this is not yet compatible with iTunes 10

I dont use folders that often in itunes, or playlists ether actually. I find I prefer a couple smart playlists, but mostly itunes DJ with a 50 song upcoming list.

I use musical notes that are accessible from the Character Viewer to prepend to my playlist names. They have the same effect of coming first in sort order.

Look under the Unicode title of Miscellaneous Symbols (starting from 00002600) in the Character Viewer.

E.g., ♩♪♫ ♬

Any way to resume playback on long playlists when iTunes is closed and open again? And I mean something better than sorting by last played or "Now Where Was I"? Thanks.

"And you can even hide all of your playlists if you want by clicking the triangle next to Playlists in the iTunes sidebar."

Actually, iTunes 10 doesn't have a triangle next to the Playlists item. To hide all the playlists, click on the "Hide" button that appears when you hover over the Playlists item.

Yep, I missed that, sorry. I wrote the article before iTunes 10 was released, and it was pushed back because of the new version.

If you have a lot of playlists, this is a great idea. Unfortunately, it seems the only way to move playlists into a folder is to d-r-a-g the playlist ever so slowly up to the folder. One at a time. This is so cumbersome as to be unusable.

I don't see why it has to be slowly; not in my experience. However, you can't select multiple playlists, which makes it annoying if you want to move several at the same time.

Would someone tell me how to sort my iPod playlist by album and track in iTunes 10? I did try to look this up in the Help but there is nothing on sorting. In other words, I want to reverse alphabetically sort on Albums and then sort within Albums by Track Title. Using the option key does not seem to work… THanks!

And why, after all this time, won't Apple allow mixing smart and normal playlists into alphabetical order? This strikes me as ridiculous.

Thank you for this good article. Can imagine it took you some time to find out the sorting of the characters. ;-)

Hessi from the german Mac podcast Bits und So is doing an article series on iTunes Playlist Management, with special emphasis on smart playlists at the moment. Have a look, maybe you find something useful:

Will reorganizing the playlists in iTunes into folders affect or change the synched playlists on the iPod or iPhone?
