Why the disdain for G-Tech's earlier designs? I've always found them to be very pleasing and "consumer-friendly." They're hardly heavy or bulky (nor either "gunmetal" or "steel"), and can be quickly disassembled. They also provide a multitude of ports... isn't that consumer-friendly?

I would certainly choose the older design over this plastic, non-serviceable glued-up design

"The G-Drive is the most impressive drive we’ve seen from G-Technology in the portable market."

Obviously you have not reviewed any other enclosure like the GDRIVE-Mini with FW800 and USB2 7200 RPM drive....will blow this drive out of the water !

I too raise my hand for the former G-Tech design. This white drive is pretty, but the metal drives are a fantastic match for Mac hardware. I've always thought they looked as if they were designed by Apple, and I have a feeling G-Technology's intention was just that!

I agree, what a BS statement! The drives are beautifully designed and elegant. I too prefer the older design. I own half a dozen and they’ve been rock solid performers.

I love the early G-Tech designs. But more importantly, and from experience, G-Tech drives have been the most reliable I've ever used.

It has been my experience that consumers and businesses alike love the look of previous G-Tech "Metal" designs. I've placed hundreds of them without a single complaint regarding performance or design. In fact this article is the first I've heard referring to them as "Bulky" or comparing them to "Cinder blocks." Agree that the firewire 7200rpm versions are superior, especially for audio & film applications

+1 on on the existing design, I’ve got a G-Tech RAID next to my Mac, and my first reaction was not good. MW missed one marketing point straight away, and it’s right on the first line of G-Technologies’ portal for the new drive - it’s targeted specifically at MacBook users, offers that up right away. OK, deep sigh now, back to work… :D

Hi all. Thanks for your comments. This is Erin with G-Tech. I wanted to let you know that the current G-DRIVE minis are still available in the same great design...and with 7200RPM drives! We've just expanded our product line. The new G-DRIVE mobile USB (above) is designed for the new MacBook, features an aluminum enclosure and offers 5400 RPM drives.

Looking forward to higher capacities than 500 gigs in the G-DRIVE mini’s. Love em, own 4.

I have a 50GB G-Tech OLDER drive and no matter how fast this new USB version is spec'd, it can't possibly compare to the speed and throughput of a 7200 RPM drive connected via Firewire 800.

So, how could this new USB model at 5400 RPM be the "most impressive drive we’ve seen from G-Technology in the portable market"? The statement is ridiculous! It's patently false.

Please smack the reviewer and alter the review to include correct information so that new users won't be mislead that a slower drive through a slower connection is the "most impressive".
