"As far as Apple is concerned, the important thing is expanding its reach to the point where anybody can buy an iPad" Um... anybody CAN buy an iPad now! Apple.com is only a click away.

Certainly starts to lend more credence to those "Verizon iPhone" rumors we keep hearing.

Yea, this speaks volumes for a Verizon iPhone. I was really hoping for a Sprint iPhone though. I'm not touching Verizon again with a 10-foot pole.

If you're fortunate enough to live in a Clear service area, you can get a "4G" personal wi-fi device for $100 with no contract. They charge $25/month.

That's a good bit better than $130 and 3G speeds.

And now a word from our lawyers.

What is their problem with Sprint anyway, it just makes sense to get a sprint evo and have a 4g phone w/ hotspot features. Anything else doesn't make any real sense to me. If anybody out there can justify Verizon's awful plan please clarify. I refuse to jump up and down about this.

B) Agreed. It seems to me that it's been awhile since we've had a really good "one more thing" product introduction from Steve.

Don't give up hope yet... you never can be quite sure what Steve is hiding up his sleeves. We all know that Apple's preference is to keep the fans guessing until the last possible moment, and I seem to recall that they've even gone so far as to start misleading rumors of their own, with just enough of a seed of truth in them to sound convincing. Who's to say that this isn't another situation in that vein? Perhaps they specifically allowed Verizon and AT&T to make announcements, in order to make us all believe that those are the only two players in the game... while the reality might well turn out to be quite a bit different when Steve finally takes to the stage.

Personally, I still think that a wide-open playing field, where all carriers (big and small) can offer the iPhone would absolutely be the best move that Apple could make, both in terms of market-share and mind-share. Hopefully, Steve agrees with me....

I think it is crazy that you have to have a separate device (mifi) with you to access Verizon's data network. Why isn't it just built in to the iPad like the 3G AT&T version?

This is interesting. Because the iPad goes thru MIFI, it won't have the limitations of the 3G version. For example, you can watch abc.com's app video streams at the highest rate available on Verizon, but on the 3G model, the video is capped at a less and uglier rate with poor frame rate.

iPod Touch + Verizon MiFi + Skype or Yahoo Messenger.
