"You can’t, however, call yourself. When I tried to call from my iPod touch to my Mac (and vice-versa), both of which are on my Apple account, FaceTime told me that I was busy. Families that share Apple accounts and want to be able to FaceTime among devices them will need to create new accounts for that purpose, unless Apple lifts this restriction."

I didn't have that problem. I have three devices - MBP, iphone, ipod touch, all connected to the same Apple Account. I did, however, add additional email addresses to the Facetime application. I did not have to create additional apple accounts.

Well, it may still have some rough edges, but it will serve its purpose for the holiday season...

- Somebody tries to decide if to get a Mac or a PC. Children and grandchildren have iPhones and iPod touches... PCs do not do FaceTime yet. Decision made.
- Somebody tries to decide if to get an iPhone or an Android phone and already has a Mac. Decision made.
- Apple wants to push the open FaceTime protocol bundle, but nobody moves. Points 1 and 2 will change that. Be prepared for a shipload of FT enabled third party devices for 2011...

Brilliant move.

Apple changed isight to facetime just for the MBA I think. Because apple website says MBA uses the same camera as the front facing camera in iPhone and iPod touch since the name FaceTime Camera... iSight will still be there in other macs that have more space for a bigger camera... that is just a guess though

Interesting, it actually let me call myself between my iPhone 4 and my MacBook Air, only for a brief moment. Both are on the same Apple account. It did cut out after about a second though, as I say, so I'm not sure whats up with that.

Whatever. Skype works on many more platforms. Much more useful in a cross-platform world. I love Mac but I'm not going to limit myself like that. And Skype is cool in lots of other ways.

My issue with this is how do I know who has the software or an ios device? I am sure most of my address book contacts don't, so....?

… and extremely extremely annoying in a WHOLE lot other ways. The app skype is awful, even Yahoo Messenger has more options. The contact list management is terrible and the whole application is heavy as hell.

Skype as VoIP client is OK, but it could be MUCH better.

Well, even if that is true: how exactly do you video chat with somebody on an iPhone or iPod touch using Skype? There is just no app for that...

This FaceTime for Mac. 3G and Wi-Fi only matter to iOS devices.

I realize that but the article did not mention if the iOS devices were using 3g or wifi.

Personally, I think FaceTime should have been integrated with iChat or vice-versa.
