The reason Microsoft didn't renew the media version was no doubt because nobody wanted to use that media management software. Too bad, it was actually pretty good and filled in a niche left by Extensis' departure from that market when they dropped the standalone version of Portfolio. But of course, Microsoft has no clue when it comes to marketing to the photography world. They know they have little chance of unseating the Mac's grip on that segment of the industry.

So only the Home and Student edition will be on sale? You should change the title of the article. Bummer as the EULA specifically says no to business use.

Sorry MS, I will not be spending the EoY money I have been authorized to spend on this over priced package. We only bought the 2008 version 2 years ago for $100/ea because it was so cheap. We could still get by with Office X if we had to. An update to iWork will get our $$$.

Extensis still sells Portfolio 8.5. It costs $199

Dear Friends

I was delaying our purchases of Office 2011 because of the cost, but I may take the hit if there's a big discount on the Home & Business edition.

leicaman, Microsoft bought iView Media and changed its name to Microsoft Expression Media before selling it to PhaseOne. Expression Media is great software and handles EPS files much better than Portfolio. Portfolio standalone is still my primary digital asset management software, though, just because so many of my catalogs were made with it.

I believe Portfolio standalone is still under active development (v. 8.5.5 shipped earlier this year), though the uber-expensive workgroup version looks as if it receives a lot more attention.

At $37/copy for the 3-license pack, count me as sold! I'm no big MS Fan, but I get way too many Word/Excel/PowerPoint files sent to me (or folks who want such files from me). The return of macros is the final deal closer for me.

Yea but compared to my home and office 2008 edition, there is no email program included. My wife is 100% dependent on Entourage so now I'm forced to buy the "professional" version if I want to upgrade.

I'm still unclear as to the Home and Student licensing, both technical and legal. Do I understand correctly that it permits activation on up to three computers, but that it's difficult to move an activation to a fourth computer? Product activation was the last straw that finally convinced me to ditch Microsoft several years ago. I can use my OS X and iWork family packs on up to five computers on the honor system.

Haven't used Microsoft products like Office in many years. Don't see the need now either. Adobe is far better. Keep it all Apple and Adobe. Leave the cheap crap for microcrap.
