Can someone tell me what is the use of this program ?? I save my web passwords in safari and for retrieving many other passwords use Key Chain access of Mac OS X. So what is really the point of this program ??

The review offers a good explanation of the features 1Password offers that aren't built into the Mac OS.

+1 to snagitseven

I'll have it for a year in January. It used to be my New Year's tradition to plop down in front of the TV and change passwords on every site. I gave 1password a go on their trial and was hooked. I've got it, of course, on my Mac...but also I've purchased the iPhone app (the Pro version). Before multitasking, the Pro version let you create a bookmarklet that would switch to 1P, you copied the pw, and it would automatically switch back to Safari. Now, the Pro version is for iPad's resolution.

I am also using the beta of the Windows version, and pre-purchased a license for it. While not nearly as robust as the Mac application, it is still an essential piece of software for me. Three of my chief nit-picks in the current beta are: 1) no handy, small popup displays next to your mouse when 1P isn't sure which log in to use; instead, a full 1P menu window is displayed. 2) personal information and credit card filling in aren't supported yet; gotta copy from the application. 3) This is probably the biggest one: can't fill in logins that are pop up windows. Gotta C&P from the application.

My final comment is about 1P-Anywhere. UNFORTUNATELY, syncing with MobileMe just absolutely does not work. This is not Agile's fault, but I do have iDisk, so I don't really want to have another cloud service (i.e. Dropbox). They warn against using iDisk, but I tried anyway. Forget it. I was beach balled for MINUTES when I'd try to have it fill in my info. So for now, I annoyingly just upload the library file to iDisk and pull it to my work PC. (The iPhone syncs automatically.) Waiting on Apple to make iDisk a better experience, but I may bite the bullet and get Dropbox just to have a place to store 1P.

1P now runs on my work Windows 7 Laptop, home iMac, iPad and iPhone all synched through DropBox. I too am a MobileMe user but the fact that 1P manages my DropBox password makes it no hassle to run both.

Can't agree more about the current Windows version but it is only a beta and at least its there and in development. Looking forward to the same Mac functionality, particularly anything that can be done to give right click functionality and Safari support.

Along with Launch Bar this is one of the first programs I install upon getting a new mac or windows machine, iphone, ipdad, Android phone...well you get the picture. This product can honestly be called "One password to rule them all". Easy to set up and maintain, syncing across multiple platforms is a snap with Dropbox (no kludgy work around), integrates with all the browsers I use, and a few that I don't. The reviewer had to have been looking high and low for "cons" for this software, since we install it at work on everyones new mac (we just buy them licenses in their name) so the "business license" con isn't really a "con" at all.

I couldn't live without this. It's the best program out there if you ask me. And the support from Agile is super. They are quick and no matter what problem you have they make sure you understand the solution. I have 1Password Pro on both my iphone and ipad and it is great. With the Dropbox feature you couldn't ask for anything better to sync. And it works with RockMelt perfectly. Great review John. And Mahalo Agile.

1Password is an outstanding app. I resisted buying a license for months because I consider it pricey. But ten minutes after downloading a demo copy I was sold. There is essentially no downside to 1P. Their online tech support is outstanding, and they're responsive to user suggestions for improvement—key features for me.

There are a couple of minor improvements I can easily live without but would like to see: 1) I'd like the option of storing documents in the 1P vault, and 2) I'm grateful for 1PasswordAnywhere, which allows me to access my accounts/passwords from any computer; but instead of logging in to an account with a single click (like I do in the regular app) in 1P-Anywhere I have to copy and paste my username and password to the login page of the account in question.

p.s: I logged into Macworld using 1P.

sorry man, but claiming that a product not having a backdoor is a con... wow
master passwords are written on a piece of paper, put into an envelope and put into a safe (or a drawer).
that is a fairly standard procedure. Storing any information online would not fix this "con" either you remember the password for the encryption (i.e. a master password) or not. If you do not, and there is a backdoor... how long do you think it will take for someone to use the backdoor to get the data?

I have already read the article and worked with the program. But if these are really the features, it isn't worth it for 40$ !! It is nothing more than all of the things that KeyChain Access and safari ( or any other browser) provide, except for saving credit cards details.
And I personally never save any information of my credit cards anywhere. No matter how secure the system is. I always wondered what is special about 1password do I missing something about this program or this is realy what it supposed to be. With this article I'm sure now that there is nothing special about the program. PS: Having a master password which can open any other password is SINGLE POINT OF FAILURE. Which means if your master password is somehow revealed you have shared all of your data with the third person and GOOD LUCK.

Thank you very much for the incredible review John!

Regarding retrieving the Master Password, I agree with the other commenters that not being able to circumvent the Master Password is a feature. However, that is not to say this is not a good feature for some of our users such as yourself. While I don't personally want this feature, I am glad you shared your request with us as it is the only way we can know what our users want. What's interesting is many of the features in 1Password today are features I never had planned originally but our users helped guide us and often we end up with awesome features that I love :)

If we ever allow circumventing the Master Password, I think it would be part of the Business Edition that you talked about. I can see a lot of value in having 1Password deployed within an organization and the IT staff being able to recover information in the event of a forgotten password or after an employee leaves. We will certainly consider a Business Edition in future versions of 1Password and would love to have your input into what other features you'd like to see there.

Thanks again John for taking the time to write such an in-depth review and sharing what you love about 1Password and where we can improve. Seeing 1Password awarded 4½ mice is wonderful and has me smiling ear to ear! Oh, and thanks for everyone's lovely comments here as well; they have made my day!

PS: As mc4o1993 pointed out, we're giving away some fantastic gifts for registered users to say thank you for making what we do possible. Here's the newsletter we sent out explaining the gifts and how to retrieve them:

I use 1Password because I keep reading about potential security exploits involving Safari AutoFill and the Keychain. For example, hidden fields on a webpage that get autofilled with your credentials because your Keychain happens to be unlocked at the moment. So I was interested in having one more layer between my passwords and the Internet, where I have to manually invoke every password fill-in. In addition, it's a major pain to want to get into a site on the iPhone and not remember the password, so the ability of 1Password to have an iPhone app and sync to it is very very useful. I only wish the iOS apps were free for owners of 1Password instead of being extra cost.

I do not store my master password or credit cards anywhere on the computer or online.

(The Keychain, by the way, is just another version of that single point of failure you're concerned about. And it uses your login password! At least with 1Password it can be different...)

How does 1P work when you need to log in from a public computer?

I chose LastPass instead because -
it does all that
It's free
it's already completely cross platform
it's free
It works with all major browsers
it's free
you can store it in a small flash drive with portable Firefox
and it's free

The article mentions local logins, but not in much detail; does1Password facilitate opening of Windows shares (samba) over a network, or encrypted disc images on the hard drive? How about VPN logins? Maybe users could comment.

You can save pretty much any password you like in 1Password, but it won't auto-fill those password like it does in the browser.

I purchased 1Password when it first became available. It makes my online life much simpler, and safer. I like the fact that I can use one program that works with my desktop, my iPhone and my iPad.

The upgrade pricing has been very fair for each new version. But more importantly, these guys have the best support I've ever seen. I once emailed them a support question, and within five minutes (really, five minutes!) I had an answer and a solution to my problem.
