It seems to be a worthy upgrade from Acrobat 8. I don't buy every version of Acrobat for the reasons above. I would use aftermarket acrobat apps, but every one I've tried seems buggy and if I'm going to have buggy, it might as well be officially buggy.

Apple needs to do one of two things, buy Adobe so that their stuff will finally work well, or release apps that will replace Adobe.

I agree with those who say Adobe thumbs their nose (or worse) at Mac users. The lack of Acrobat X integration with CS 5 is criminal. I would stop purchasing every other version of Acrobat if someone would make a Mac product that was all inclusive and really worked.

Why would anyone need Acrobat when you can do most of it in Preview?

What about people who bought CS5 Suites and got 9 Pro with it? Now what? Are we supposed to pay $200 to get the update? I thought you couldn't update individual apps in a Suite. Or wait until CS6, by which time Acrobat 11 will be coming? Any ideas how Suite users will get the newest?

What is even worse is for volume license customers who purchased maintenance licenses to ensure free upgrades. Acrobat X is released, but Adobe refuses to provide it to their CS5 maintenance customers. They say that Acrobat X is not part of the suite. That is true, but Acrobat itself is. With CS4 when Acrobat 8 was in it, we received free upgrades to Acrobat 9 when it was released.

Any rumors that Adobe is working on an ePub design application? PDF is a very mature technology. Reflowable formats are still like the Wild West. It'd be great if someone with Adobe's statue would bring a bit of law and order to the digital Tombstone.

I am not aware of any rumors of a new ePub application, instead I would recommend InDesign. It has had ePub export for the last few versions (it was called Digital Editions). While the export is not perfect, it is still one of the best ePub authoring tools out there. For more info about ePub and InDesign, I would recommend that you check out there two books.

Jamus is right. You can't upgrade the Acrobat 9 Pro that was bundled w/CS5 to Acrobat X. Only those with standalone copies of Acrobat 9 Pro can upgrade. If you're a CS5 user and want Acrobat X right now, you have to buy it standalone -- $449. Or maybe you can find a cheap shrinkwrapped copy of Acro 9 and pay the $200 upgrade price.

Adobe has said that Acrobat X will be included in the next "dot release" of Creative Suite. That's like when CS3 came out and then Acrobat 9 came out a few months later. After a short while, Adobe had a "CS3.3" (a dot release) that came w/the new Acrobat and also Fireworks I believe. You had to pay an upgrade fee to get it.

But they haven't said when the dot release is coming.

BTW Pariah I'm a little surprised that considering this is Macworld mag, you didn't mention the feature disparity between the Mac and Windows versions. I have a Mac but use Acro X in Windows 7 (via Parallels) for that reason.

...?

Edit: Here's the Adobe FAQ about the issue
