I use "album view" for the library and TV shows. Guess that is a compromise between Cover Flow and the column browser.

I try to get friends to see the light that is the column browser. I can't understand how anyone can just exist with a long list of every track they've got.
I'm convinced that's why people who say they hate iTunes actually hate it.

I know it's a personal preference thing, but when you've got as many albums and works and composers and what have you as I do, the column browser is the only way to go. Wish Apple made it easier to find instead of moving it and hiding it all the time!

I agree, JonathanBaldwin. I'd love to be able to set the column browser as a global default. It seems weird and pointless that I have to hit command-B to view it each and every time I connect my iPod.

Cover flow and album view are pleasing to the eye, but, if you want to navigate swiftly and efficiently through your library, nothing beats the combination of column browser and list view.

I've been using the column browser for as long as I can remember, and yes its great.
I also use List view. But I cannot get the albums from one artist or band sorted by (release) year. When I click the 'Year' column, everything gets messy.
I want to be able to sort by album AND by year. Say, an artist has 4 albums released ranging from 1975 till 1983 (1975, 1977, 1981, 1983), then I want to see the 1975 album first, followed by the 1977 album, the 1981 album and finally the 1983 album.
Is there a way to accomplish that?

The "Album" column can be sorted 3 ways. Each time you click it, it switches between "Album", "Album by Artist" and "Album by Artist/Year". The "Album by Artist/Year" may be what you are looking for.

You are kiddin' me, seriously?
That's exactly what I was looking for.
Gonna give that a try as soon as I get home from work.
Thanks!

"The principal of the Column Browser is simple." (1) It's "principle."

"Each time you select an item in the first column, the number of items shown in the second column reduces." (2) This is false.

I think it depends on how you have your music set up or if you know what you're looking for. I have plenty of columns in Column / List View and can find music quickly based on that and scrolling. Also, I can search for whatever I want using the search field and have plenty of well-organized smart albums.

Here is how I find an artist in iTunes:

1. click in the library to gain focus (assume list view)
2. type the first few letters of the artist's name
3. there is no step 3, but there may be some scrolling if the chosen letters belong to many artists in your library

This is absolutely true, and something I just happened upon in iTunes recently. If you click in the Artist list view to switch focus, then type the artist name, depending on the speed of your fingers, iTunes will go straight there. I'm not talking about the search box at all. For example, I click Allman Brothers under the Artist list. I then type "john lennon" as fast as I can. iTunes will jump directly down to John Lennon.

Didn't know about this view. Thanks. It should be with the other four views at the top of the View menu.

One more thing: I have noticed that sometimes the albums do not arrange in proper order despite using the "Album by Artist/Year" option. Usually I find that one of the items in the album is is mislabeled as to release year, and this is often a non-track such as an album booklet, iTunesLP, etc. So if the order is incorrect, check the release date of each included item under Information.
