There is nothing that I can find that indicates how much iTunes charges for "sharing" or "gifting" a playlist. It mentions that your credit card will be charged. Before I continue, does one pay per song, or is going through iTunes only a formality?

Sharing is free. Gifting is a price per song. When you go to gift a playlist, you'll see the cost.

I'd like to know if there is a way to share a playlist between duplicate libraries where one library has the songs encoded as AppleLossless and the other library has the same songs encoded as MP3. I presume the issue is that each track's file path in the XML file ends with a different extension than the other library is using.

Under Home Sharing, you say you can select all the tracks then click Import. This doesn't work--I only see the option to Import a Playlist, and using the XML file, nothing is "found" by iTunes and it leaves an empty playlist in the sidebar. Same thing with Home Sharing off, if I were to send a Playlist to someone else; it gives no option to download the missing songs from the iTunes store. So where's the sharing, then?

yes you will be led through the process and it charges as if you were purchasing the songs anew from iTunes. As noted in the article if your playlist contains any songs not purchased from iTunes, those tunes will not be gifted.

Thank You so much for this. After an hour of reading different things that weren't telling me anything useful, I finally found yours. That actually told me accurate information.

How do you share "songs" you have recorded yourself and hold the rights?

I would like to gift a playlist to a very large group of people (i.e., giveaway the playlist to customers/guests as a form of merchandising). In other words, I am trying to figure out the iTunes version of physically producing a branded/promotional mixtape CD. Doing it through iTunes is not only the way people actually consume music, but it covers all the IP issues for you and avoids manufacturing/distro nonsense. Is there a way I can give people the location of their "gift" so that they can retrieve it on their own? I.e., QR code or some such? And can I set it up so iTunes charges me and not my guests, with some quantity limit?
