There's also the excellent ThumbsUp for resizing the pictures available at http://www.devon-tec...ducts/freeware.

I use "ResizeMe". It's free and does several things. It's drag'n'drop of course, batch list with scale & resize, rotate or flip, crop, reflection, drop shadow, watermark, output format and rename. I've used it for several years now and it keeps getting better and better.

I use an ancient freeware called Goldberg (I'm running Tiger on both my Macs so I'm not sure if it's ok on Snow Leopard).
I like it for quick re-sizing pics on stuff I'm selling.

How could anyone forget about longtime standard and well up to date "Graphic Converter"? It's shareware but always useable even without a donation to the developer.

Graphic Converter is a great tool. I think it's a bit of overkill for this kind of thing, but it can certainly do the job.

No need for external programs. Use Automator to create a couple of different Services. One for resizing. One for cropping. It's easy to figure out and can do a lot that you might need. If you do get some external programs, they might offer additional Automator actions for you to use and stack together.
So -- free, built-in, available in the Finder.

For examples, tutorials, and free downloads of Mac OS X services, visit: macosxautomation.com

And for a free Mac OS X service for converting selected text to an image, visit: padilicious.com

And a couple of great image editors that ship with built-in Automator actions, and are available on the App Store are:

Acorn and Pixelmator

You know that with these six words you lose 90% of the Mac-using population, right?
