Can i set TimeMachine to back up JUST once a month ?

Given that goal, I think the simplest solution is just to leave your TM drive powered off. When you want to back up, turn it on, tell TM to back up immediately and then turn it off for the next month again. Less chance of unintentional loss that way.

An application (free) called TimeMachineEditor will allow you to set your TM backup to any frequency you want. Very easily. http://timesoftware....emachineeditor/

Can anyone recommend a waterproof/fireproof enclosure that can keep a hard drive safe in case of fire or flood.

Since I travell a lot, I don't find confortable to carry an external HD.

So I made ONLY online backups.
I use Mozy-Home (2GB free) to backup my Documents folder, and Work folder, work in progress, local databases and some extra items in my Library folder (calendars, address book, bento, Things Database, Evernote Database, etc). This is a daily backup.

I also use Drop-box (2GB free) so I have a secondary online COPY of the most important/recent files.

I use SugarSync (5GB free) for online back-up of my photos (and have them stored full size in my iPod). Only updated when added photos (rarely)

"My Sites" are stored in the respective servers and I can allways recover from there if I lose my local copy (thru FTP)
Mails are IMAP so stored in the servers.

The only thing I don't have a back-up is Music, Videos, Books and Apps. All of them enter into the "Would Be a Drag to Replace" category.

Not so bad for not having an extra HD.
And the total cost of all my backup system is zero, yes totaly free.

Not sure if this thread is still running, being it's now a year later; Similarly, I lacked the ambition to read through the following pages of rabbit holes to find out whether my question has already been answered, but here goes:
With the new 'cloud' technology and thus iCloud, what are my options for using this type of backup for both my iphone, ipad, and most importantly, iMac? I've heard that the capabilities are much more efficient and have taken over any Time Machine options for secure backup. Am I completely off here?
My three year old daughter recently knocked my year old imac onto our hard wood floor! After three days of the above mentioned reactions and coming to grips with the loss of the most sentimentally valuable and irreplaceable possession (second of course to my daughter) to me, I was strong enough to slide the protective screen glass away and 'just for the hell of it', plug her in. To my complete surprise, she turned on with no problem to reveal my nostalgic stash safe and sound. Needless to say, I'm kicking it in gear before the inevitable yet again strikes, at which time I'll not so luckily be blessed with the resurrected mac.
Sorry for having just further dug the rabbit hole, but I'm emphasizing my need for secure and reliable storage. Thanks for your time!
Jessica

Online backup is a horrible choice - especially if one has a large HDD.
Does anyone ever consider the math to figure out how long it would take to download 1TB @ 5-6MBPS (average download speed time for many people)?
The answer is - many weeks.

Still arguably, better than nothing I guess. But it's not very smart IMHO.

I agree. Online backup should be in addition to local backups.

Chirstopher,

I have an imac with 2 Time capsules. I am trying to use one (1 TB) for as a shared drive on the network (mac + pc) and the second one (3 TB). As a Time Machine storage for the imac, and the 1 YB shared drive mentioned. WHen I bought the 3TB drive at the Apple Store, they said this was possible.

I am trying to get this to work, but the 1 TB TC, shows as SHARED, and is not included in the Time Machine backup list.

Can you give me an idea of hoe to set this up?

Thanks,

I've got a macbook pro and want to double back up my data. Just bought a seagate 1.5tb harddrive and want to format it for use on both macs and pcs.

1. Is there a way to encrypt your harddrive that isn't gonna slow it wayyy down?
2. Best way to auto-sync your files between the computer and external so that when changes are made on the laptop, it's backedup on the harddrive?
3. My laptop is full and I need to delete some files. Was thinking I would create a partition in the monster harddrive i just bought, use timemachine on one half and use the other half for random storage. Ideas?
