I just put a single 240 gig OCZ Vertex 2 drive in my Mac Pro, using a sled from MaxUpgrades and boy howdy, it gave me a whole new computer. And the sled costs just under $47. But it adds only one drive to the Mac Pro slot.

So, for a reasonable price (my drive was on sale for just over $400, normally $599) I had my boot times go from 93 to 28 seconds, from pressing the power button to seeing all my icons on my desktop.

When I looked at a similar product, it cost a lot more and didn't let you switch which raid the caddy used. This is a much better solution. Not I'm thinking I might need another 240 gig drive for a RAID 0 setup!

I was so happy with my new boot drive I got a 120 gig OCZ Vertex 2 and sled for my Photoshop scratch disk. Talk about a speed demon!

After installing a 60 GB OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD for my system disk, my 6-core Mac Pro has had issues with freezing up after waking from sleep, requiring a hard reboot. Several forums discuss this issue, and it appears that there is a systemic problem with these drives from various manufacturers. It's a crapshoot whether a given Mac with a given SSD will have this problem, so anyone who is considering installing an SSD startup drive in their Mac should be aware of this issue.

MacPro has a SataII interface which maxes out at 3 gbs. Is that 3 gbs total for all 4 drive bays on a single interface? Or 3 gbs for each drive bay? If its a single interface for all the drive bays, then wouldn't 8 ssd's run up against 3 gbs as a bottleneck?

Gary54: 3 Gbps per drive (so 12 Gbps total for 4 drive bays).
