It would appear that they have taken away the ability to remove the finder from the dock if you are using something like pathfinder.

I don't mean to be rude, but why is this even a story?

Because there are millions of new Mac users and especially with Mac OS 10.6.6 and buying from the Mac App Store, the apps are automatically added to the dock, which could mean a whole lot of apps on the dock.

So, a simple article telling and/or reminding people how to add and remove App icons from the dock is a great story.

You'd rather have more rumours today?

GregoriusM nailed it. Lots of new Mac users. Lots of people who are not advanced Mac users who are going to litter their Dock with Mac App Store Apps.

Not every story we post is just for you. That doesn't make it any less relevant.

Oh don't be ridiculous. This is a site for Mac fans, not the homepage of every new MacBook. What a useless article... I'm sure this is even covered in the Apple start guides.

You've heard of The Google, right? Forest/Trees, Mr. Boulton.

Actually, this article on "basics" still did not address a recurring problem with my current three year old 24" iMac.
For whatever reason the curser tends to hang up and sometimes drag or highlight icons on the desktop when I an just moving it around. Other than having to return an icon to wherever it belongs once in a while, the real zinger is suddenly going to the (pop up) Dock and finding an icon gone. Then it's off to the HD and open the lost app and then keep it in Dock again. Until next time.
Some icons are in the Dock without a removal choice, like the Trash. I wish there was a check box for any that I want to stay put...
"Sit!" "Stay!"
:)
For you experts that are easily bored, sorry for the "newby" post -- I have only owned Mac's since 1992.

You know, this actually sounds like the mouse may physically be having a problem. Have you tried another mouse?

As far as the article is concerned. Yes, when I first saw the title I thought "What use could that be, drag it in, drag it out". But hey, for the novices which it is written for, it's perfect. I thought you were going to miss the ability to move an open apps icon to add it to the dock, but you didn't! Simple, yet thorough. Good job.

Exactly. EVERYONE uses Google search for finding about something they don't know. And when they do, articles like this one come up in the search. And when they do, their Mac experience is made even that much better.

And, for that matter, who is more a Mac fan than a NEW MAC OWNER?!! Remember YOUR excitement when you got your first Mac?

Keep up the Hints articles, Macworld! You'd be surprised how many "seasoned" Mac users learn a thing or two from them too. (Well, YOU wouldn't be surprised, obviously, but you get the idea...) :D

During Apple's financial report yesterday, they said that about half of the Macs sold in Q1 2011 were to new Mac users. Consider them new Mac fans. It's a shame you think we shouldn't help them.

Personally I think this is just a waste of a post. I'm all for getting new Mac users, but something this simple and which I'm certain is in one of the first Apple PC to Mac videos just seems a bit too pathetic for me.

The only reason I opened this story was to read the comments of people complaining about the story and others defending it. Thanks for not letting me down.

Maybe you shouldn't click on any more Mac Basics stories, then.
