I prefer to integrate Google Calendar with iCal via BusySync.

Or why not just use the "subscribe" function in iCal? I can edit, add and delete any event from any iOS (iCal enabled) device since I've subscribe to my Google calendar from my main computer (the one that sync with my iDevices).

Lex, great article. After two years of being a bit frustrated with Google Apps, I’m switching back from GC to MM for my iPhone. I’ve tired of my iPhone (a tool I need)) bunging up my Contacts (their data fields don’t match) and my notifications in GC. Google’s Calendar just doesn’t work as I’d hoped for any of our smartphones in our company if we want to edit on our devices, Google’s been griped at for over two years to fix their notifications syncing with mobile clients, and they just don’t get it. Our Android and WebOS devices bung up Contacts and Calendar events too, the iOS isn’t the culprit (and we’ve tried CalDAV too!).

BTW, I’m buying MM at discounts from Amazon, and it’s costing only a fraction of one hour of therapy...

Great question! My goal in this piece was to show how to replace what is essentially free software—iCal—with a free alternative. BusyCal is great, but honestly I feel happy with my Fluid approach. If you want to make the investment, though, BusyCal is great software.

I agree - BusyCal is awesome. I have no complaints here.

Post your comments for How to switch to Google Calendar here

I'd like to be able to use Google Calendar to reflect my iCal/MobileMe calendar - not to create new events in Google, only in iCal/MobileMe(On occasion, I haven't been able to log in to MobileMe and would like to have a back-up online calendar to go to in emergency situations).

The instructions on how to import the iCal calendars to Google were excellent, but I'm not clear on how to get Google calendars to remain in sync with iCal/MobileMe. I apologize in advance if the answer has already been posted - and thank you for any help you can offer.

I don't really like Apple's iPhone Calendar App. There are a couple of better (in my opinion) Calendar Apps that sync with Google Calendar.

I don't mind the price of MobileMe. In general, I'd rather pay for a good product, than waste time on a free product. My time is valuable.

I'd like to use iCal and I do use MobileMe, but iCal was nothing but trouble. It was dawg slow and I kept having synchronization problems. So, a couple of years ago I moved to google calendar. Maybe iCal is better now, but when I think of all the times I had to go through and clean up corrupted or duplicated data, I think it's too much trouble for little gain.

Sycing the calendar to the iPhone using Microsoft Exchange protocol doesn't keep the calendar colors in sync which drives me crazy. I much prefer to just tap "sync calendars" in the gmail account. iOS 4 added caldev syncing via an on/off switch in the gmail account setup. This approach will keep calendar colors in sync which is a must for me!

No need to download Fluid: Chrome's had the ability to create SSBs since it came out...

I may have skimmed this and the comments to quickly (so many articles in the latest Macworld article to make it through), but I'm actually having a huge problem with MobileMe not accepting my iCal and Address Book data right now. I don't use MobileMe as an app, per se, but as a go between for my computer and iPhone so that I don't have to sync via iTunes. Now, I easily synched my Google contacts with my iPhone, so that's great (and both my Google contacts and calendars are synced with my computer by BusySync), but I cannot sync any Google calendars by my primary calendar, which I don't use (I have set up multiple calendars based on David Allen's GTD system, plus my wife and I share our calendars).

So, my question is how do I bypass mobile me to share all my selected Google calendars with my iPhone?

What a pain, right? This is why I subscribed to MobileMe. For a long time, it made all this stuff fairly simple. But now that there's this technical hiccup, I have no calendars on my iPhone, and it's a bit crippling to my lifestyle.

Why not use iCal as a Google Calendar client. It's an excellent Google Calendar client and things that interact with iCal will interact with Google Calendar by way of it. Also, why use the Exchange connection to Google Calendar on your iOS devices when the faster less-buggy directly-supported Google Calendar support exists?

I've been using Google Calendar for a few years now and it works swimmingly with Apple's own products -- even with a dozen delegate calendars on there.

I agree, I use iCal as a client for Google Calendar. The entire family is set up so we have four color coded calendars that work well from any computer via the internet, and work with our Macs and iPads seamlessly. iCal provides a great front end.

I feel extremely lame for not being able to follow these simple instructions, but I get nothing but import errors from Google when I try to get my iCal calendars uploaded:

"Processed zero events.
Failed to import events: Unable to process your iCal/CSV file.."

If you have a tip for how to get by this one, I'd be very grateful. Glad this is working for lots of other folks, though!

I tried to use Exchange but have a password problem. When I am all set up Exchange asks for my password and I assume this is my email acct. password, and it will not accept it. Any thoughts?

Lex, thanks for a great resource.

I'm having trouble with alerts. I've set various calendar events with email and pop-up alerts, but neither seem to be working. It also does not pop up on my iPhone (3GS). Alerts are an important part of my scheduling/calendaring, so if anyone knows how to solve that, be great.

Thanks

Is there a way to include google tasks in the sync?

There's a cool app I use, Android and iOS, called Calengoo and it includes tasks.
