Curious, would old-media-coming-to-new-media-types (for want of a better phrase) go with this over an existing iPad-friendly solution like Pixelmag? http://t.co/lBZqmyl

Who writes these articles, Adobe's marketing department? What about an objective, critical analysis of the whole subscription thing rather than reprinting Adobe's doublespeak?

y-a-w-n.

I'm a long-time Adobe user but I don't ever remember Adobe doing a partial update on their suites and then charging not only full price for it but actually raising the price from previous upgrades. Can you spell m-o-n-o-p-o-l-y? Grab your ankles.

I'm a long-time Adobe user--since 1987--and am productive enough with their tools so that their prices seem reasonable, as I make many times their purchase price with them.

We are using Design Premium CS5 and it is very slick and works very well in 10.6.7 on late-model iMacs. CS5.5 has important new capabilities which we need to keep us with the new demand for e-books and other new media.

Quit parroting your stupid "monopoly" mantra. Quark had its chance back in the day, but squandered it. So did Aldus.

Adobe, like Apple with OS X, created a killer product in inDesign many years ago now, and they haven't rested on their laurels. They deserve to be not only compensated but to profit well from their extensive labor and dedication to making great products--like Apple.

Why are Adobe prices so expensive? I was recently over at a friend's house that was using iStudio Publisher for the Mac and was very impressed with it. While it was some what basic and limited, he was able to create some very nice looking documents similar to what could be done in Adobe InDesign. Price for iStudio Publisher? $17.99. Plus, there are photo editors that can do some of what Adobe Photoshop can do for a heck a lot of cheaper as well. I am betting a lot people can get by with spending less than $100 on alternative software versus $1299 or $1899. Not happy with Adobe prices, including the upgrade price for a half a version.

Adobe "attempted" to compete in the web market with InMotion (Flash killer) and GoLive (Dreamweaver killer). They failed with those half-baked apps and decided to buy Macromedia and by doing so kicked any potential competition to the curb. That's when they became a monopoly.

Now, modest designers who don't work for a lucrative agency struggle to keep up with the steep prices and increases. Ask any European user of Adobe if they're ok with paying what Adobe asks for the international versions. It's obvious why they went from an 18 - 24 month cycle to a 12 month cycle.

I'm happy for you that you have such deep pockets. Don't pass judgement on those less fortunate than yourself.

what are you dumb? This is a Mac site. They have no qualms about being biased against Adobe after Jobs Mob ripped into Adobe more than once. This site ALWAYS slants towards an anti-everything stance. If you want an unbiased analysis, head to other sites like Creative Cow. There's no hidden agenda on non-Apple fanboy sites.

Biased against Adobe? For saying that Flash sucked on Mobile devices? Most people now see that was true. Mobile devices which support flash now don't provide a great experience and most of the flash content for mobile devices has to be redone so that it is even useable on mobile devices. Which begs the question, if you have to redo the flash video content just for mobile devices, why not just use HTML5? Like Jobs suggested. Jobs ripped Adobe, well, because they deserved it. And many people, PC and Mac, are not pleased with Adobe's quick yet expensive upgrade with minimal improvements...

The upgrade from CS5 to CS5.5, while expensive, isn't full price. It's $549 for the Master Collection.

Adobe needs a good ripping, every large company does...even Apple got spanked by the antenna issue with the iphone 4. May not have hit their bottom line too much, but that is because despite the shortcomings they made a great product that no one else does. Correct me if I'm wrong but for the most part Adobe software is decent and does what its supposed to do. Also, its mostly used by professionals who get paid to use it to create their work product, therefore I can see why it costs. Doesn't mean I'll be upgrading any time soon though, but for those who will benefit from the new capabilities...it'll probably be worth it.

Adobe new upgrade prices:

$549 - Master Collection
$399 - Design Premium
$299 - Design Standard
$399 - Web Premium
$399 - Production Premium

Seems awfully expensive for a half a version upgrade with minimal additional useful features.

... $399 - Design Premium ... pretty steep if I consider, that full upgrade is $599.00 ...

I have to say NO (!) to ADOBE monopoly this time ...

Please. Don't suggest that "Apple fanboy sites" like (according to you) this one have an agenda whereas "other" sites do not, while asking "are you dumb?" You're only insulting yourself.
