App wise. None. However, for those that jb their phone there is some out there, but jb-ing your phone and loading apps from Curia is no different then that Android market. No controls to monitor what apps are inserted and this is the result.

Don't expect anything different from Google until they start controlling the apps that come into their store... But then that would turn them into an evil empire like Apple.

Google won't do that; that wouldn't be 'open'. *facepalm*

It won't really matter what Google does to control malicious Apps. They've already got a huge security hole, that by failed design will require updates at least every 6 weeks.

Adobe Flash should assist them in this regard, just like it helped RIM today.

The mess should straighten out when my porn sites switch to HTML5...

It does have an edit feature, just click on the "View entire thread" at the bottom of the article before the 1st post and the edit button will pop up under your post. B)

They are the Microsoft of the smartphones. Those who choose Android because its 'open' deserve no better than those who complain about the viruses that ravage Windows but won't leave that cursed platform behind.

Their digital life is what they have made it.

Not if the only criteria are a malware check or other subterfuge.

Sooner or later Google is going to have to do something about this. They may be reluctant to adopt the strategy they have been so loudly decrying in Apple, but every time a new malware infestation hits the Android Market their reputation takes a hit - and the iOS gets a boost. How much bad PR can they take? They've already moved to make Android 3 less amenable to OEM tinkering. If they ever want the Android Market to be something more than a junkyard, they are going to have to create a gatekeeper to enforcing some basic standards. Otherwise, malware vandals will eat them alive.

Before the app store existed? That's amazing.

The first was a Trojan Horse that affected jailbreakers.

How do you expect Google to do such a check? Apple does a check for unapproved APIs by doing static analysis of applications before they are approved. Google doesn't do anything like this because they place no restrictions on what code can do on the platform. So doing any kind of automated checking is going to be pretty much impossible. They would have to manually check every application before it was placed in the market like Apple does. Google has shown no inclination to spend the time and money required for such an endeavor. Apple already has to check every application so that they can insure that apps in the App Store meet their requirements.

Google's Android business model is the reason that malware is more prevalent in the Android market and I don't see that changing any time soon.
