You can get back some of the visual voicemail capabilities back using google voice as your phone number and its iphone app.

For the legally unlocked U.S. iPhone community, we've known for a while some problems associated with using the iPhone 4 off the AT&T network. You will not be able to FACETIME on T-Mobile. The T-Mobile network will not activate the feature. In order to FACETIME, you will need to be on an AT&T plan or on pre-paid or jailbreak your legally unlocked phone. If you are on AT&T pre-paid, you will not be able to receive data and your MMS will not work either. AT&T pre-paid will not let you change your APN settings nor even give you the option of seeing them in order get your MMS to work. If you intend on going PRE-PAID, you should be aware of these trade-offs. AT&T does it's best to lock you into a monthly plan to get full functionality with their network. The consolation is that you are not committed to a two year contract, thus saving hundreds of dollars a year, and can get full functionality on prepaid networks overseas like I was able to when I lived abroad.

The author [didn't need to do what he did]. Use sharp scissors instead and you can download a bunch of forms to trace the actual size of a micro-SIM from the Internet. Then finish up by polishing the cut-out SIM with a nail filer.

I suggest you try the settings suggested on this page:

http://leimobile.com...ings-for-ios-4/

and let us know if that fixes your MMS issue. Disclaimer: no, I have not tried it myself, I don't even own an iPhone.

Good luck!

Also, if you are going to spend $650 to do this, you might as well drop another $8 and just get a micro-sim cutter tool and do it right:

We had to "spoof" the user agent to get full resolution images over MMS. When we used the iPhone user agent, or no user agent - TMobile systems would cut the resolution of the images down to like 300x200 or something tiny like that. It is entirely possible that is no longer the case, and that using the correct iPhone user agent string will allow full resolution photos through. Like I said, it's been a year since I was using this... :)

I've used a few iPhones on T-Mobile that I've unlocked myself. At one point I had MMS working, but somewhere along the way it mysteriously stopped working. EDGE data on T-Mobile isn't terrible, in a strong signal area I was actually able to stream Pandora in its high quality setting, but it isn't fast enough to stream video. Eventually, I decided I wanted 3G, the security of AppleCare, and to not be constantly waiting for jailbreaks and unlocks so I switched to Verizon. The problem I have with going the factory unlocked route is that the $450 premium is a lot, and it's questionable to me whether you can make up that savings on T-Mobile, and even if you do if not having 3G is really worth it. I bought my iPhones used but they were never in the $650 range, more like $300. I suppose people that have WiFi at home, school, and work could deal with the no 3G issue.

I personally wouldn't use a boxcutter/utility knife for such delicate work. Yikes.

"Eventually, I decided I wanted 3G, the security of AppleCare, and to not be constantly waiting for jailbreaks and unlocks so I switched to Verizon."

Bingo! This is what 99.99% of iPhone users think. The tech wannabe crowd wants people to believe unlocked and jailbroken iPhones are a significant percentage of the user base. They are not. They are minuscule. And to give up features, deal with jailbreaks and unlocks, risk damaging the device, live with slower data rates, just for bragging rights, is incredibly stupid, even asinine. But there are those idiots out there.

Ha. No cuts on the table. That's a clear cutting board.

I have been using an unlocked iPhone 4 on T-mobile (USA) since last August. My parents are on my Family plan (a 2nd iPhone 4 and the original iPhone). I do not have any data plans on my Family plan. WiFi is fine for us (I have a Data plan on my iPad). So my comments, to cut the sim, I used this hardware (www.cutmysim.com), it has worked well on the 6 sims that I have cut so far and it came with some adapters, that would allow me to put the micro sim back into a normal sim slot.

As for the Facetime comment, you may be able to get it to work. On my iPhone 4, I could not activate it in Europe, but when I tried in the US on the 2nd attempt it worked and I have not had any issues since. Now the other iPhone 4 also had some issues at 1st, but after several attempts it started working. Then one day after about 5 months, all the Facetime contacts were lost and we have not been able to get it activated again.

So if you do not feel that you need to pay whatever AT&T thinks a data plan should cost you, and feel like WiFi is just fine for many things (just like Apple does for Facetime, downloading App > 20MB, ...) then you can save some money.

Family Plan, 3 iPhones, no Data, no Text, 500 min voice shared, ~ $60/month including taxes.
