My guess is that the iPod power adapter doesn't provide enough juice for the camcorder to charge, but your powered hub does. As far as I know, when it comes to the amount of current is concerned, not all USB ports are created. I seem to remember that on my iMac only one of its USB ports is recommended for syncing (and charging) an iPod.

Other devices also do this -- I had packed away my Sony Reader after acquiring my iPad, but as my wife keeps taking the iPad off of me at crucial moments in my reading, I decided to unpack the Sony Reader.

Battery was dead, and using a AC-USB charger, the device started mis-behaving and the reset button did nothing. I decided to plug the reader to the USB port on my monitor and 5 or 6 hours later, it started up on its own and appeared on my desktop.

i have to use regular batteries since the rechargeable batteries it came with was awful. They refuse to charge, regardless of the outlet/usb port i use to charge them. I am extremely disappointed.

Which device are you talking about? The Flip MinoHD doesn't have replaceable batteries.

That's interesting. Perhaps even more interesting is the fact that Flip camcorders are still around. In actuality it seems they're all but dead.

I read the title of this article thinking that your would discuss the rise and quick fall of the Flip camcorder. I mean, honestly, with all of the smartphones around that now record in HD, there is no real need for this kind of "portable" camcorder in the pockets of most consumers.

If you're wanting a camera for more of a hobby there are SO much better camcorders you can buy for just a little more money. If you're wanting something portable that you can take just about anywhere then invest your money in a better smartphone.

Good observation. I wrote a piece on this very subject in April.

Some devices shut down when the amperage is too high, so as to not fry. Jawbones do this. I suspect Flip said "too hot" with the iPod charger amperage (there are three different iPod / iPad chargers with 3 different amperages, I think 200 mA for old, 1 A for new, and 2A for iPad).

The USB standard is I think 200 mA (on a PC) to 500 mA (hub), so I suspect you used a 1A to 2A charger, the Flip said "too hot" and then gently charged when the "cooler" 200 - 500 mA source was there.

Make sense?

In "the olden days" of car batteries, a dead battery could often not be revived on a trickle charger, but needed an initial Kick to "get its attention" so to speak. Afert the initial jolt, forget how long, and it would then take a charge on the trickle charger... May be a similar case with the flip?

The real answer is - I believe - that the Flip since it has its software on the device it only powers when plugged into a computer (PC or Mac). Very aggravating but true. I've tried it with several flips and multiple PC's running multiple OS' and other USB power sources (AC-USB, Car-USB, etc).

Having battled this problem for weeks, I finally stumbled upon a never fail solution (for a PC, because I've not tried it on my various macs):
Simply use the USB back panel connectors, which are attached directly to the motherboard. Avoid the front panel USB connectors. I do not know why this method works...

My Flip UltraHD can certainly use any AA batteries; I guess the MinoHD cannot...
