Battery was dead, and using a AC-USB charger, the device started mis-behaving and the reset button did nothing. I decided to plug the reader to the USB port on my monitor and 5 or 6 hours later, it started up on its own and appeared on my desktop.

Which device are you talking about? The Flip MinoHD doesn't have replaceable batteries.

I read the title of this article thinking that your would discuss the rise and quick fall of the Flip camcorder. I mean, honestly, with all of the smartphones around that now record in HD, there is no real need for this kind of "portable" camcorder in the pockets of most consumers.
If you're wanting a camera for more of a hobby there are SO much better camcorders you can buy for just a little more money. If you're wanting something portable that you can take just about anywhere then invest your money in a better smartphone.

Good observation. I wrote a piece on this very subject in April.

The USB standard is I think 200 mA (on a PC) to 500 mA (hub), so I suspect you used a 1A to 2A charger, the Flip said "too hot" and then gently charged when the "cooler" 200 - 500 mA source was there.
Make sense?

Simply use the USB back panel connectors, which are attached directly to the motherboard. Avoid the front panel USB connectors. I do not know why this method works...

My Flip UltraHD can certainly use any AA batteries; I guess the MinoHD cannot...
