I keep preset alarms every 15 minutes. I just turn on the one(s) I want. Silent and fast.

I only have an iPod Touch, and my solution's not as as elegant as a double-tap, but wouldn't plugging in the headphones silence the built-in speaker, too?

On my 3G, I put my thumb over the speaker hole. Same when dialing.
