I'd rather have a MBAir than a MacBook any day. I owned a Core 2 Duo based MacBook - it was the worst model of Mac I ever owned. The palm rest cracked and the fan came on far too often, and it wasn't a quiet fan either.

I can't imagine the average student (who the MacBook was aimed at) needing optical disks often enough to warrant this model over the MBAir (with an external drive), and I'll bet Apple's sales figures showed that too.

Apple fixed the cracked palm rest on my son's Macbook after he had it 3 years. No Applecare, they just fixed it. With any problem like this take it by the Apple store. Even though you didn't buy it there they will usually treat you right.

Shoot! I just got a Late 2010 13-inch MacBook Air, thinking that Apple would wait a year before making a new model. I wonder if there is a MacBook Air Up-to-date program...

Now I want Apple to make a 15-inch MacBook Air with the resolution of a 17-inch MacBook Pro, along with a FaceTime HD. I'm going to call Apple and ask for a newer model ;-)

And another optical-drive-equipped Mac fades into history.

Not quite accurate. The MacBook still lives on in the education Apple store. $899.

They fixed my cracked palm rest too, no charge, and updated my OS to Leopard while they were at it. The cracking was a design flaw, but Apple has realized that and take appropriate actions. Mine was four years old, someone actually spilled coffee IN my optical drive. Still going strong and being used for intensive photo editing. My only complaint is I can only go up to 2gb of ram.

They've replaced my cracked piece twice!

Sorry to disagree with those who think the small Macbook Air is a good replacement for the White Macbook. It really is NOT. For one thing the 11.6" screen is going to be a turnoff for many and it certainly is much smaller then the 13.3" Macbook. Most buyers of a White Macbook would not simply choose a 11.6" Macbook Air. I'll give the benefit of doubt that people won't miss the optical drive. But as I read many times of Netbook owners on the PC side. Some users did find this annoying to have to purchase a optical drive. No Apple I think Apple made a big mistake eliminating the Macbook for consumers. I have used Mac's for over 10 years and this is the first time I would tell someone interested in a entry level Mac notebook to either backup and buy a Macbook Pro or better yet buy a PC Notebook with a fast hard drive, more RAM and better graphics for much less.

I feel foolish,as on a budget, I purchased the white MacBook a year ago, October 31st, for $1500....a year of lessons @$99. It's
my first foray into using nonPC's for my writings and sendings out to magazines, and
I thought I had made a wise purchase-even signed up(again) for more lessons (Another $$99) THIS October.I don't read Apple news...so I was unaware this white MacBookI spent hard-earnd money on,is now considered obsolete. In this economy? Really? Apple figures everyone can just UPGRADE, for fun? I'm disgusted.

I spent $1500 on a budget for a white MacBook...and discontinued PC use. I feel like
the money was spent unwisely, and that on purchase, someone might have told me
the item would be discontinued.I also got the MacBook in the fall and received an HP
printer-which I hadn't used until October, installed, and which refuses to work.I feel
disgusted. The Macbook works well.I am a writer, book reviewer, and go to lessons
after the $99 fee--but I feel Apple was not honest with me in my initial purchase. In THIS economy, people can't just be tossing away $1500 items, for a "glossy new
version."
