Is there a good way with the AirPort Extreme to monitor where people are going by computer and site? I have set up OpenDNS, but it lists every site for everybody in the house. I have a few kids and would like to know who is going where. So far I have not been able to find any good solutions. THANKS!

A more sophisticated solution is to use openDNS. Not only do they provide a free filtering service but you can also improve your connectivity to the web by using their public DNS server. See openDNS for more details.

Not with AirPort Extreme, but you could use Parental Controls for this. You can switch on Parental Controls for your kids' accounts and remove all the restrictions. Even with restrictions removed, there will still be a log of websites visited, which you can access within Parental Controls.

Timed access only works wirelessly. If you are hardwired (RJ-45 Jack) to the time machine, it will not work.

The suggested solution makes an assumption that each child (and the parent) is using a separate device (iMac / iPad / etc.) However, if all share one computer, this suggestion will not work. Any thoughts on how to handle that?

Excellent timing! I have been trying to find a Macified solution such as yours. Only one problem, I use an Airport Express. Help!

Thank you so much for this column. This is exactly what I have been struggling to figure out how to limit Internet on their various devices.

One other question: just recently realized while I thought teen was using laptop for school, she was really just watching DVDs. I know that you can limit access to different programs on the laptop through Parental Controls. Can I "turn off the DVD player" this way too?

Another question: just bought daughter new MacBook pro for birthday. The store set it up with her as admin. She is ok with me be an admin too. Will I be able to set parental controls over her admin account? Or add monitoring software for her account. Btw, she know I was going to do and is ok with that. She knows the monitoring would only be red if her grades or behavior slip. I will respect her privacy otherwise.

This was a great article - thanks. Is there a way to block access to social networking sites during "homework" time? The kids need internet access for a lot of their homework but are distracted by Facebook etc.
