Image Capture and Image Importer work well.

Another easy solution is the iOS app WiFi Photo Transfer or one of its clones. WiFi Photo Transfer is free, allows photos on an iOS device to be transferred to any device with a standard web browser, and retains full resolution and metadata when transferring via .zip file.

Good tip! Here's one more. Not only can you automatically import images, but you can automatically process them as well! Launch Automator, and in the template sheet, choose Image Capture for the type of workflow you want to create. Build you favorite image processing workflow and save. In Image capture you can assign the newly created Image Capture workflow to run automatically upon import. W00t!
