Selecting "From Time Machine Or Other Disk" will allow Target Mode transfer over FireWire and is most likely the fastest method to Copy data from old to new Mac.

Unfortunately, I followed Apple's and Macworld's advice and launched Migration Assist on my old mac, after installing the Snow Leopard to Lion Migration Assist update first.

I let the process go overnight, and it hung up, getting nowhere. Several calls to Apple for support, and they suggested doing it as Target Mode migration, which is the way I was accustomed. For some reason, it seems that they decided to dumb-down the instructions, because Target Mode was confusing some people.

But it works, and works faster.

I have ten more macs to move over to Lion at some point. They will all be done Target Mode.

Hi! I used migration assistant but I feel like I lost some of the bells and whistles with the Macbook Air because of the migration from my old mac. Has anyone else experienced this?
Thank you in advance.

I just bought a new Macbook-pro to retire my 2008 Macbook and used the Migration assistant. It worked perfectly and brought over 300GB from the old to the new Mac in about 1.5 hours. I did get a bit confused around the same "user name" stuff that you mentioned at the end of the article and I ended up with two user names, one with all the old Mac stuff that works perfectly and one an empty file-less shell. Shall I just delete the empty user name ? Tom

My experience is as frustrating as Cheapirish's - hours and hours, and no transfer - everything woudl seem to go fine, then it would freeze, and the new Air would throw up a window saying that the old Air had stopped being accessible - while in fact the old Air was still fully connected tot he internet. - If only these things wwere REALLY simple - a laptop to laptop cable, and press a button - why not?

I have always been on Macs, But my files are on Word, and now I cannot open them. I think there may be a way, perhaps opening up my files saved on Time machine or backed up to an external drive and copying the files to Pages, but I am not sure how to do that. If I go back to saved files (time machine) and external drive, will I be able to get back to Lion?? Or---do I need to transfer the files in time machine or on the external drive to Rich text? And how would I do that??

LibreOffice. Free, opens and can save all the word/office formats, the only thing it's missing is the macro-viruses (I've never seen a _useful_ macro in 20+ years of this, so I'm not missing them.)

How do you access the transferred files? I used migration assistant and the transfer completed, but now I don't see a folder or anything from my old computer on my new one...
