Doing it now. Based on what I've heard from developer friends, the iOS 5 betas have been pretty solid. I normally wait a bit (prudence!), but this one looks pretty solid.

Keep your eyes open for iCloud issues, though - Apple's record on things like this is spotty. They've clearly been prepping for this moment for quite a while, so their preparation (without hindsight as yet) probably can't be faulted.

I received the following message when trying to sign in to iCloud: "Apple ID Update Required. You must change your Apple ID Login to an email address".

My login is simple name/number combination. Now it is forcing me to use an email address.

Hoping this is the biggest issue that I have.

I'm updating iPad 1st gen now, then Mac update. Apple TV failed x2 and moving from MobileMe to iCloud failed. Will keep trying though

Can I correctly assume that if you want to use a different ID for the Apple ID and iCloud ID (e.g. so you can share store purchases between family members' devices but not share their other data) that you would have to set up manually, i.e. tap on "Skip This Step" and then use the Settings app? Or, could you specify the iCloud ID in that step and then change the Apple ID for purchases later?

Anyone have direct download links? I click on Check for Update and it says my device has the most recent version already, which I know isn't the case since it's not running iOS 5.

No, I was just trying to sign up. And I would prefer to use my "me.com" email address but that is tied to MobileMe (not my main iTunes account). I am forced to use a gmail account.

Relax people. Give it a few days for everything to settle out, see what the bugs are, and wait for the load on Apple's servers to diminish.

As of about an hour ago, when I tried updating my iPhone by clicking 'Check for Update', iTunes (10.5) insisted that 4.3.5 is up to date.

So no joy here in San Jose yet.

Do I need to get the Lion update first? I have already update iTunes.

Isn't that name the first part of the @me.com address?
I remember with mobileme you could only use the name to log in and it would autocomplete the email, now you might have to type it in by yourself.
It that's what you're talking about?

Is there a reason for choosing update vs. restore?
