Slight problem with that. While they will get the message, the person will not be able to respond to it; which kills the whole flow of the application.

I am having the same problem. My wife has an iPad 2 and I have one, but while we can activate iMessage on our iPads, we cannot send each other a message through iMessage, even using two different Apple ID's and e-mail addresses. We get the message that our e-mail addresses are not registered with iMessage. is there some step in the set-up I missed>

I actually think you can or will be able to soon. I read somewhere where it will work with ichat.

will this cost money to imessage out of province like it does for a text
No, the iMessage will go out over the data network or WiFi. It isn't a SMS text message nor does it use that service. The cell providers are pretty choked about this, as they can't stop it as it is a totally legit use of the data network.
