I have been waiting for this app since the first time I checked in to a hotel that only had wired Internet in the room. I nearly ran out to by an AirportExpress, only to realize that I had no way to configure it with my iPad. Next time I travel I can add a tiny Express to my gadget bag and I will fear the lack of wifi no more! Finally, the iPad can fulfill its promise as my only travel computer.

Hope this information is added to an update of the Take Control book, which I have really learned a lot from. Great article! I got the app, but haven't tried it yet. Now I'm going to play with it tonight. Though I won't be changing my passwords or anything on a regular basis because it's become easier to do from my iPhone or iPad. The problem is, my TiVO in the bedroom is a major pain to get to update its wireless adapter to a new password. TiVO needs to improve their setup for that.

The utility cannot manage older Airport Express units.
I have an older unit (B, G wireless only)
It is updated to the latest firmware, and the utility sees it, but reports that it cannot manage this unit. Just a heads up...

Very good point. I unknowingly took my rather new Airport Express with me to a hotel about 2 weeks ago, and didn't realize that I couldn't configure the darn thing with just my iPad in tow. Now I can, and next time will be very happy.

By the way Glenn, or anyone who can answer. I noticed this in the app when I opened it to play around last week.
What does this mean when you wrote, "Tap the Internet, and it shows the current network status, IP address, DNS servers, and the domain name if one’s assigned. Tap a base station and you’re prompted for a password,"
What exactly is the "password" being asked for here? Is it my network enryption password, or the password to my computer used to make changes, or is it prompting me to create a password here?

You mention not being able to configure MobileMe or iCloud accounts... Even the desktop client appears to be incompatible with iCloud. Once I converted my MobileMe account to iCloud all of my base stations (at 6 houses) began flashing yellow, unable to connect ot Back to My Mac.

Absolutely. The next time we rev the book, we'll add the information, possibly as an appendix.
