When I initially checked for updates with the phone off the charger Software Update responded that no updates were available. I then plugged it in it searched again and showed me the 5.0.1 update. Not sure if plugging it in made a difference, but that's what happened.

Looks like 44 megs on the 4S (according to a Twitter post I just saw.) On my 3GS it's just under 40 megs.

Thank you, fribhey and mef613.
I did see it on there: 46MB on my iPad 2 and 53MB on my iPhone 4.
And it only took around 5 minutes to update on both!!

My 4s just stated 55.5MB (iPad v1 is 39.2MB) and requires WiFi (not 3G) to download and install.

My choices for my 4S were 55.5Mb over the air or 813Mb via iTunes EEEEK!!! Went for over the air strangely enough although it wasn't happy when I let my screen lock. Seems to have worked fine in the end though

If I understand you correctly, it did. Over-the-air OS updates only work by default with the device is connected to a power source.

It'd be great if Apple would give us a battery save toggling app. Run it once, and it'd turn on whatever battery saving features users had selected. Run it again, and it'd flip them the other way. That'd be a lot easier than wading through menus.

I updated both my iPhone 4s and iPad 2 over the air (Wi-Fi) un-plugged with no problems though it did suggest I plug into power. Both devices had nearly a full charge so I didn't see the need to jack in.

The power button on my 3 GS suddenly stopped to work, a week or so after upgrading to iOS 5.0; everything else was fine, volume, mute, and the phone worked as usual. The only way to power down was to attempt a reset, using the home/power buttons simultaneously. To turn it back on, a charger was required. Upon inspection at the local repair shop it was concluded not to be hardware related. Being out of warranty, Apple (Sweden) would charge me the flat exchange rate of about 300-350 US$. Bummer! Today, when iOS 5.0.1 was released, I upgraded, and lo and behold, the power button was back! As I've seen quite a few similar complaints in various forums, my experience with 3 GS/iOS 5 might be helpful to others.
