I'm disappointed with photo stream's limitations. It's so un-Apple. I can only imagine the howls of anguish and venomous comments that would've flown if Microsoft had unveiled such a service. iCloud isn't ready for prime time.

This is one of those "why the hell didn't I think of that already?!" tips. Thanks a lot, I'm going to start doing this straight away!

I also have wanted to use the Automatic Upload, but only for my "keeper" pics from my Aperture library (e.g photos from my DSLR or other "real" camera vs. iPhone). The above process will work for that assuming you just add the step in iPhoto to move over from Aperture to iPhoto the "keepers", which are then available to all the IOS devices and other computers connected to your iCloud photo stream

But Aperture does this already. It automatically imports your photo stream into a new project for each month. It's pretty smart and works well.

Thanks for the tip. I need a way to use my custom import naming conventions when importing Photostream photos into Aperture. This tip works except that the photos import with the generic name the camera gives the photos. Any way to get the Aperture regular Import dialogue box to come up in the process so I can use my regular import settings? My workaround now is to drag Photostream pics to the desktop then import them from there. (This flow brings up the normal Aperture Import dialogue box so I can rename etc upon import)

Why not just automatically import into Aperture, and then periodically delete photos you don't want to keep?

That's what I've been doing. Did I miss something here?

I don't get this story about photo stream all or nothing. Photo stream comes in as a separate event which you can edit and delete as little as 1 or as much as all photos that come in on photo stream. It's not all or nothing.
You have full control of what you keep or what you delete coming in from the stream.

This way works better for me, as I probably only want say 1-5% of the crap from my Photstream in Aperture. So for me it's easier to pick out the odd shot from time to time and leave the rest dumped in iPhoto, rather than having everything dumped in Aperture and then having to go through and delete 95% of it. I guess it depends on how large a proportion of your Photostream images you're going to eventually want in Aperture as to how useful this is.

I still don't get it.

Why not turn on Photo Stream in Aperture, and turn off automatic import? Then, you can drag in the photos from Photo Stream that you want, and it's the same effect, but without all of this iPhoto complication?

I'm still at a loss for how this tip is helpful.

I think whether you use this method, or some of the others mentioned here, is up to you. This workflow is presented as an alternative to consider, and to modify to your personal tastes. The reason why I present it, is because I don't want to go through and delete a bunch of shots from Aperture. (Do I want 2000 time-lapse shots in Aperture. Probably not!) I shoot a lot of crazy stuff with my iPhone. I experiment with it constantly. Only a small percentage of it ends up in Aperture. By having iPhoto serve as a gatekeeper (since I don't really use iPhoto otherwise), then I can just pick and choose from it via the Browser what ends up in Aperture. I think it works great. Devise a system that works for you. BTW: we present these things as food for thought, not mandates :)

They are talking about editing what's in your photo stream.

lets say that you forget that you have it turned on and you take a naughty pic of yourself to send your SO. It's in your stream until either 30 days is up or you add more than 1000 photos in 30 days and that one happens to be the oldest one and drops off. You can't go to iCloud.com, view your stream and remove said photo. Even if you delete it from your camera roll on the device you used, it's still in the stream

Hi Derrick- I know you don't mean it as a mandate- and I've gotten tons of great info from you- thanks! I just didn't "get" it & thought that these issues were worth surfacing in the same spirit.

If you don't tell Aperture to auto-import, you won't have to "go through and delete a bunch of shots from Aperture" - they'll just drop out of the Photo Stream after 30 days or 1000 shots. And you can "pick and choose" from the Photo Stream within Aperture to select what you want in your library- without iPhoto.

I'm not pointing this out to prove anything- I'd like to make sure that I haven't missed something, and avoid extra work...

Unless you reset your stream.
