So my wife asked me if there was a way to turn the iPad into a portable DVD player for the kids. I looked and I found nothing out there other than the remote desktop apps which is useless if your on a road trip unless you preload them on your home computer before hitting the road of course. I guess my question is can you do a video in to the iPad?

You can rip the DVDs you own and then put them on the iPad. See this article.

Hi
I don't really see where you're going with this. So, you don't want to have to convert DVDs to digital and you don't want to do the remote video thing? It really is one or the other. Christ linked to a great step-by-step on ripping DVDs. If you don't have room on your iPad, you could do one of a few different remote access methods: online storage like Dropbox or iDisk, directly to your computer using apps like
Air Video or web sharing, etc.

The only issue with ripping DVDs is Paramount / Disney / etc latest encryption method. There is a workaround of identifying the exact track before attempting to rip a disc but it doesn't always succeed. I find it annoying because these companies can get away with it. Why? I can't even watch some of the newest films through Mac OS X's DVD Player app and need to use my Xbox 360. If I didn't have another DVD playing device, I'd be screwed. Anywho... Another discussion for another time.

What I am looking for is an app that can take an image of a DVD and play it on an iPad as if it were an actual DVD, complete with menus, slide shows, etc.

Our company has several DVDs for training, sales presentations, trade show videos, etc., and we would like to load these onto dealers' iPads so that they can be run without any need for an external machine or WiFi.

Frankly, redoing all this stuff as an eBook or iBook etc, would be a time-consuming and expensive last resort.

What you're asking for is a way to play a DVD disk image and I don't believe that can be done on an iOS device.

There is no way to connect a DVD player. The iPad has no "Video input" as far as I know.
