I also wish it would either default to "show oldest first" or allow a configuration setting that would last between sessions. Many comments are actually commenting on comments previously posted. Reading in a different order makes it hard to follow threads. I've given up on reading Lifehacker since they re-did their comment system many months ago. I'd hate to think Macworld is following in their footsteps.

I do understand where they are going - for new users in particular, you want to profile prominantly highly rated comments to draw people in.

However don't forget your active and existing members! If I set my preference for oldest first, remember it!

And even for newbies, there needs to be an indication of context and hierarchy. As was pointed out, it's confusing all the time when first looking that things are out of order. There need to be visual cues.

I must reiterate that it is a huge pain in the butt with the new commenting system to subscribe to a thread (receive emails when there are replies). After writing a post, I have to click a "reply" button to get to the forum topic (but wait 15 seconds first so the auto-post-limiter won't snag me), then click to go to the thread and then subscribe. Too many clicks! Please make it an option in each article's comments section. Thanks!

I am really disappointed that the comment threads for articles still don't allow for easy subscription to new comments. Of course, I only am disappointed because I love the talk that goes on in these threads, but please show some love and polish up the commenting interface for your articles.
