AVCHD into iMovie 11

My brand new Canon Vixia HFS30 camcorder outputs high def AVCHD, and my computer is a new iMac. I have read that iMovie 11 has trouble importing such material, and a company called Bigasoft wants to sell software to make it possible. However, my first attempt to capture video from the camera to the computer appears to be totally successful. Am I missing something?
