More options:
MPEG Streamclip includes support for downloading YouTube videos in it's beta version.
In ClickToFlash, right click on the video and select download.
iMac 21.5 inch, 3.6GHz Core i5 (BTO), Mid 2010.

I use an extension for Safari called ClickToFlash. After enabling it I simply right-click on any YouTube and Vimeo vid and click on "Download Video". Simple.

I forgot to also mention that ClickToFlash allows the user to download MPEG-4 and FLV video files.

I am able to download MPG-4 files by Option-double-clicking on it in Safari’s Activity window, I have downloaded hundreds of video this way from youtube as well as from other sites. I don't quite understand why you state "Unfortunately, you can’t download MPEG-4 files using this method."

I use Miro, from getmiro.com, for my YouTube video needs. It's open-source and works okay, but not great.

For Safari users, ClickToPlugin is the best option. Once installed, just Right-Click - Download Video.

Yes, ClickToPlugin is pretty much mandatory on a Mac.

As for the activity window, it is marvelous for downloading images "protected" by the dreaded "no right click allowed" coding. By extension, this is a heads up for anyone who thinks that you can prevent downloading on the web. You can't.

I know, why don't you visit the old bungalow and attach a video so we can practice right from the article?

No need to go that far back in time when you can simply browse through our latest videos. :)

While mentioning Videobox you might as well also mention ClipGrab and Fastest Free YouTube Downloader. There are a host of others like them, but these are the ones that made my final list. ClipGrab is smoother, but FFYTD has an audio normalization feature that often comes in handy. Besides being free, these also allow the user to save the audio from video clips as AAC, mp3, OGG and more.

The "host of others" often don't work as well as Videobox (I tried several that were incapable of downloading videos not found on YouTube). And some of these "host of other" applications are cheap knock-offs promoted via spam.
