IBooks Author is not an ebook authoring app. It is an iBooks authoring app.
I am busy authoring no less than 4 titles (2 at a time) at the moment, and while Author is doing its best to make us conform we are able to break out of the mold and design our own looks. There are plenty of limits but we excited by what we have done so far.
One of the titles is about our 365 day adventure around the world, and before Author we were stumped on how we were going to be able to create an ebook with 1700 full page photos. Now we have galleries and other widgets that make the task easy, and the readers will thank us for keeping the book manageable.
We still need a decent ebook tool. The titles I am working on now will never likely be on Kindle, but they will look great on the iPad.

Life, like wine, is all about balance.
