Things like sound files, PDF's, text files, etc. can be viewed, played, etc. when they arrive on an iOS device. If it's a file that iOS can't deal with, it just won't appear. However, it WILL transfer to another Mac! It works really fast too, much faster than sending the file via an email attachment.
Yes, you can personalize the alert sounds that play and many other settings to your heart's content. For something that's just a beta, Messages is a nice surprise!

Would be nice if my install hadn't been stuck for the last three hours on "Optimizing system for installed software", and it's telling me it has 3 hours and 43 minutes to go, and that hasn't changed for the last hour! Beta? More like Alpha minus 1!

Too bad Hebrew messages are split into multiple one-word-messages during send, and it doesn't even show on the Mac! only the receiver sees it this way...

Using my iPhone Messages app; How do I enter an e-mail address to address a new message to a Mac Messages beta recipient?. The iPhone Messages app keyboard only displays alphabetic characters and numbers, no symbols, like the 'at' sign ( @ ) and the period ( . ) that are required in e-mail addresses.
Also, the iPhone Messages app To: field Plus sign ( + ) allows one to select a recipient from the Contacts app, but it only shows phone numbers, no e-mail addresses.

When you press the Message button on your phone and start a new message, just start to choose a name and the contacts start to show up. Choose the one that has the email associated with it.(They have to have an IOS device for you to me able to iMessage them). Also, if the person isn't in your address book, just enter it in the To: section. All the appropriate symbols show up like the "at" @ sign. (It is on the bottom next to the space bar).
