I couldn't get it to log into Yahoo... That was the only reason I jumped on the bandwagon to download it. Notice there is no mention in this article about yahoo either...

Too bad yahoo doesn't work. That would have been my main reason to use it since iMessages still seems very half baked in iOS and have yet to figure out how to consistently get it to work. ESPECIALLY on the iPads...

You can also send SMS text messages to your non iMessage buddies using AIM.

They might not know who it's from though so you'll have to tell them.

Does anyone know if iChat's screen sharing function will be transferred over to Messages as well? I use it all the time to help maintain my siblings computers for them. It's much faster to see their desktops and info windows than to explain to them, "Apple Menu>System Preferences>Accounts>etc."

I too want to know if iChat keeps all it's screen-sharing features, as that is my main use of it (for family IT help)

Screen sharing is absolutely still there.

I find the icon really confusing. My brain keeps thinking that the three dots on it mean that somebody is chatting me, so I click the icon and of course there's no chat. But the app opens a new window and starts composing a new chat. It's infuriating.

Is there anyway to enable timestamps? Had to use a jailbreak app to get that on my iPhone.

This is done on my iPhone (Team Pure) now. Enabled in settings.

The "What kind of works: The iMessage integration" section, at least to me, screams, "Well, my info isn't in good shape, or I didn't take the time to set up my devices properly, so here is what needs to change."

Clean up your contacts, manage your device Message settings, and 99% of what you are unhappy with in this section is solved.

Within 30 minutes (after exchanging a pair of messages with my wife's iPhone), this application went ballistic on memory. It had a virtual memory size of 8gb adding more MB every second I watched it in Activity Monitor. I immediately force-quit it, and removed it.

So, frankly, I rate this as FAIL - absolutely NOT up to Apple standards (and unacceptable for any application.)

I don't like the idea of the messages going to all devices at once either. I'd like the option to make it work like GTalk did on my old Blackberry (before I got an iPhone). Gtalk would send the message to the last device you used. So if I started a conversation on my phone, the responses would go to the phone only. If I then logged on to the computer, once I sent a message to that person from the computer, all subsequent replies would go to the computer. I would like the option of telling the software where to send the messages. Perhaps an option like how AirPlay gives choices for AirPlay devices would work.
