As someone who relies very heavily on the RSS support built into Safari, I hope this is fixed before the release. Nearly all of my bookmarks are to RSS feeds, and I really don't want to have to bounce back and forth between two apps for web browsing. I've been hoping for a while that they would build a way to sync RSS read status into Safari in iOS, but I guess they're moving in a different direction.

As an occasional user of Chrome the combined search and address is a plus. It takes a while to notice in the list exactly what you are looking for and then scroll and click it.
Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana.

Of course this is all beta, but I have a performance question anyway: Is there any sign that Apple has fixed the performance issues that it recently introduced? Namely, the dreaded "We'd like to re-load all the windows" dialog box, and the nearly-ubiquitous (and more common) spinning beachball?

This pretty much DEFINES how I use Safari. I guess if they remove this, I can go see what everyone's talking about in this Chrome thing. Or maybe give Firefox another shot?

The notifications feature is part of HTML5 (WebKit only, right now), described at http://www.html5rock...#notifications. You can see it in action using Chrome if you don't have Safari 5.2. For some reason, the only example that works with Safari is "Notification Time!". The only indicator you get is the Notifications Center menu icon turns blue. I didn't see any banner.

Chrome completely ignores RSS too. So pick the best browser for you ... and then pick the best RSS reader-app for you.

I hope too, otherwise this would be strong enough reason for me to switch to Chrome. Safari 5.1 anyway sucks in performance and is a no match for Chrome.

Thanks for the information! I've updated the article accordingly. Lack of banner may be your System Preferences settings, or it may just be how the API's interacting with Safari at present.

I rely heavily on Safari and its RSS capabilities. In fact I think it is my most used feature on Safari. I don't want to go a third party for that. Thanks for the info and if RSS is indeed left out of the final version on Mountain Lion, I don't see me upgrading anytime soon. At least until someone creates a good extension the replicates the way Safari currently handles RSS.

I hope this fixes the slow, snail-like response I get on Safari. I had to switch back to Firefox because of the dreaded "server not responding" messages I kept getting in Safari even after all the troubleshooting steps I took. would really like to return to Safari because of its unique features not in Firefox but until then...sigh...

I read constantly online and I never, ever, for any reason use RSS. Glad to see it go.

I love the single search bar.

RSS has no place in a web browser. Just like Todos and Notes have no place in a Mail reader.

Apple built these in based on technical/advertising conveniences (the notes/todos were for technical convenience, because a fake IMAP folder was the best way to sync it across devices, and I imagine they built RSS into Safari so the mechanism would gain greater popularity).

I am glad to see Apple fixing these major incongruities. Unfortunately, over the years, people have designed workflows that depend on these. While they have legitimate complaints, it will be better for all (including those who have built workflows around this) to use these mechanisms appropriately (i.e., not in Safari/Mail). It will take a little getting used to, but using something like NetNewsWire for RSS will show them just how inefficient they were being.
