You can also do google calendar synching through CalDAV, instead of Exchange. I've been synching my calendar between my iphone and iCal on my mac this way for 2.5 years now.

Also, I'm on Snow Leopard on my mac, so iCloud syncing with iCal is not an option because Apple requires you to pay $30 to upgrade to Lion to get the iCloud functionality in iCal.. The same functionality I have been using for 2.5 years for free.

You can sync iCloud and iCal using Snow Leopard. I'm doing with 2 macs running 10.6.8 and iOS 5 on my iPhone. Takes a little effort but it works.

I also use CalDAV, because when you are using a personal domain address instead of @gmail.com, you can't use Exchange because then you won't be able to use your personal address ! (I'm not talking about Goole apps for domain here, I have an alias so when a send a mail, people think it comes from my personal address, and my domain name provider has a redirect to gmail.)

Furthermore, I noticed some bugs in the implementation, you can't change meeting times for a specific meeting in a recurring meeting. It simply doesn't want to update only one, it wants to update all of them !

This scheme also adds another problem, I can't use S/MIME signing and encrypting either ! The setup just doesn't want to work.

My wife and I have used the Google approach ever since we both got iphones. I agree the setup was a bit tricky in the beginning, but it has been running just fine for nearly a year now. I love my iPhone, but I have no intention of switching over to Ical/iOS 5's icloud calender syncing. when I have a solution that works.

The author mentioned only one of Apple's way. I think that iCloud is great, but Mac OS X Server allows you to connect directly to your calendar server using the IP address rather than relying on someone else's server. OS X Server works great for large numbers of calendars (e.g., need to view employee's calendars, delegates, etc.) and for scheduling resources (e.g., rooms, cars, projectors, etc.). I just looked and my Macs and iOS devices are managing 45 calendars without difficulty. Instructions are here: http://manuals.info....erver_v10.6.pdf

iCloud is great and seems to work more consistently and easily than Google Calendar on iOS, but Google Calendar can still be a better solution that iCloud if you are setting up synchronization on an older Mac or PC that do not officially support iCloud (plus Google's web interface is way less resource-intensive than Apple's, another plus for someone who may use the web interface from an older computer or slower internet connection).

The only reason I haven't dropped Google Calendar for iCloud calendar syncing is that Google Calendar offers the option to set 2 alarms for an event. I typically like to be reminded the day before and then 30-60 minutes before. I know it sounds petty but I'd forget to prepare for things a lot more if I didn't have that feature.

In General, iCloud syncing of calendars works great but that is with 1 major caveat. The birthdays calendar (which is directly linked to your address book) has some serious problems.

I have 3 iOS devices (Phone, Pad and Touch) along with an iMac. If I enter a birthday in AB on my iMac, it shows up on the wrong day in my iPads calendar. But the right day in my iPads contacts. However, on my phone, it shows up on the wrong day in both calendar and phone.

What's really crazy. If I create a new person on my iPad, the original contacts birthday will move. It's ridiculous. I have no idea now when some of my friends birthdays are and will get reminders for 3 days in a row, on my different devices, about the same birthday.

One thing you need to be sure of - make sure you add your appointment to an iCloud calendar, not the ones on your mac even though they may also say work and home, etc. Those don't sync. Took me a bit to figure out why those appointments weren't showing up on my iPhone. You can change the default calendar to iCloud, and that's probably the best way to go if you want to sync across devices.

I switched from iCal to using Google Cal because my workplace won't let me sync my iPhone with my work Outlook calendar - so I forward appointments from my work Outlook to my personal calendar, and I want them to be automatically accepted. Google Cal lets me do this; I couldn't get iCal add the appointments without manually accepting them. Then I switched from Apple's Calendar app to CalenGoo because it's optimized for syncing with Google Cal.

Yes you can. I have been using gmail standard for years with my personal domain. Goto Gmail settings and add a send from email address. If you use the gmail smtp server it will say (sent on behalf of) but if you add your own smtp server you can send without issue...

This is unclear:
"You can ensure that your iOS device isn’t syncing your calendar with iTunes by clicking on the device in iTunes, choosing the Info tab, and ensuring that Sync iCal Calendars is unchecked."
Click on what device? There's no Calendar I can see in my iTunes. Can you be a little more specific on where one goes to uncheck "Sync iCal Calendars" please.

Very good. I synced iCal using iCloud and the appointments in my iPhone promptly disappeared. Good thing they're still on the laptop.
