cleaning software..... none. seriously.

paid for utilities..... I recommend Diskwarrior
if you don't go that route, get TechTool Pro
I stopped using TTP some years ago, but it's right up there regardless according to some serious users.

freebies/shareware.... none have the power of recovery as the two listed above. but are fast easy routine maintenance utils.
I use http://jimmitchell.org/yasu/
an alternative is OnyX

running one paid and one freebie/shareware every month or two does the trick nicely.
no AVware as YOU are the weakest link.

and get a good backup plan. As in something external to your Mac.

Seconded, although I'm among those people who still think it's useful to have TTP on-hand. In general there's no need to follow any kind of preventative regimen, but if you feel compelled to you could run DiskWarrior every few months. In particular, full-disk optimization/defragmentation tools are a waste of money. The OS does a fairly good job of keeping fragmentation low for the files for which it really matters. If you find yourself in the very rare situation of actually needing to defragment it's faster just to wipe and restore from backup. That, of course, presumes you have a backup with is up-to-date and reliable.

Always keep a minimum of 10 GB free space (20-25 GB if you use iDVD) to facilitate optimal system and application performance.
