This is ridiculously stupid in many different ways. First off, this isn't a change, this is Apple trying to be "Advanced", in which case, it's not. It's soon going to be second best and then last in leading this worlds technology. What new innovative thinking can you come up with now apple? Plus, this "4G" their claiming to have is crazy to think that they can pass a software up date and think that is going to change anything. My Galaxy SII Skyrocket has 4G LTE and I get 40mbps down and 14mbps up. The lowest I've had was close to around 16 down. I fully understand that they are talking about HSPA+ network but the difference between them is the fact that LTE connects to multiple towers at the same time. Come on Apple, seriously.
iOS 5.1 update brings 4G label to iPhone 4S on AT&T's network

Apple caves to AT&T is what this article should really say!
To call 3G+ 4G with no functional changes is a lie plain and simple. I would prefer Apple had left me the option of killing 3G Data on my iPhone 4s than to submit to AT&T and Apple's marketing Department.
The iPhone 4s is a great 3G+ device that puts many 4G LTE devices to shame. Apple should recognize this and either have left the 4s as it was or add a 3G+ indicator rather than the fake 4G monicker.
My Two Cents!

well, No. 4g refers to the fourth generation of cellular data (thats what the G stands for) since iPhone 4s is using the fourth generation of cellular data, why would they not put a 4g icon? the fact of the matter is 4g is NOT that much faster than 3g was, its just newer
Actually it really is that much faster. AT&T just has faux-g and it's really just slightly upgraded 3g. If you will, it should be called 3.5g.

Bring back the damn "Enable 3G" switch on the 4S. I work at sporting events all over the country. When there are that many people in one place that all thinks its necessary to use their phone at the same time it is IMPOSSIBLE to make or receive calls or texts. When I was able to turn off 3G on my old 3Gs I was could actually use my phone for more than just a paper weight.
Jailbreak with the newly released "Absinthe 2.0.2" for iOS 5.1.1 then install "SBSettings" which will give you a dropdown from the status bar with a swipe. One of the toggles is... wait for it... "Enable 3G." Works like a charm, I use it all the time to toggle back to EDGE whenever 3G (sorry, now 4G) is lousy on my 4S running 5.1.1

Apple sucks... Maybe with the $1 Billion Dollars from Samsung they can truly update their new phone to actual 4G/LTE Service.... But for me... Its Samsung all the way... With or with rounded corners....
