You say 'device', but I haven't been able to set a geographical reminder on my iPad or iPod Touch (don't have an iPhone...yet)

Almost every example you give of apps taking advantage of geofencing would be the OS itself taking advantage of geofencing.

I'm not saying they're bad ideas, they're great. But they're not going to come from third party developers in the App Store.

That's because your iPad (must be a WiFi only model) and iPod touch don't have the required GPS modules. Only the iPhone and, I believe, the 3G iPad have such modules.

No, even on an iPad with 3G there's no geofencing — whether that'll change with the 3rd gen I dunno, but it's a real annoyance to me. I could definitely use the capability.

Edit: Might not be an OS-level limitation, however. I see the same paragraph about the geofencing indicator mentioned in the article in Settings, so they may have just left it out of the Reminders app.

It's too bad they didn't add any *real* improvements to the Reminders app...

1. user-selectable geo-fences. I don't need to be reminded to do something if I'm walking into the door, if I'm walking in somewhere, odds are, I've already remembered.. I need to be reminded to do something as I'm about to walk or drive by a location. Let me set the geo-fence circle as large or small as I need. Better yet, let me select a stretch of road for something I need to be reminded about. Remind me to buy vitamins when driving west, remind me to buy cat food when driving east.

2. Let users select locations on a f'in MAP. I shouldn't need to have every office supply store, grocery store, pet store, etc in my contacts..

3. Multiple locations for a reminder. If I need to "buy milk" let me set a reminder so that my phone will remind me whenever I'm a mile away from anywhere I can buy some milk! Let me set all Publix stores, or all Winn-Dixie stores, or all grocery/convenience stores within 10mi of my home or office.

4. If I'm an hour drive away from the nearest reminder location, power down the gps for 15-30 minutes, save some battery life.

Was really hoping 5.1 would add at least some of these.. Guess we'll have to wait until iOS 6???

I want my iPhone to be able to automatically turn off Cellular Data when I am connected to wifi and also be able to turn it back on when I am not connected to wifi.

Geofences require a GPS, so one cannot set a geofence on an iPod Touch. I am able to use geofences in Reminders on my iPhone 4. I do not think it works on my iPad (Original Wi-Fi). It may work on the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G because it also has a GPS.

Is your iPad a WiFi + 3G model or Wi-Fi model?

To me, the value of the geofence indicator is that it prominently announces, "Is this reminder important enough to you to justify the battery juice it sucks?" This enables the user make an informed choice on battery power, an iPhone resource that is artificially limited because the battery is not swappable.

While I like the promise of geofencing, I find that it's use MURDERS my battery life. If I set it upon waking in the morning to remind of a task when I leave work, the battery will be dead before the end of my work day (I work 12 hour shifts). This is with minimal use of my iPhone AND the cellular radio turned off. It's as if the Location services searches for location non-stop, which it may do, but I haven't found any other task that takes up such power

I believe Square Card Case uses geofencing too -- you can choose to automatically open a tab when you reach a merchant, which I believe is a geofence.
