How to connect MacBook Air to an external monitor What cable needed to connect to external monitor by DVI or HDMI

What cable is needed to connect the new macbook air to an external monitor with speaker? if so will the sounds of the Macbook Air go to the external monitor then? Thanks

Depends on what kinds of inputs your display has. The Air's Mini DisplayPort connector (starting with the late 2010 models) does emit audio so if you've got a compatible monitor you can get by on just a single cable. Compatible in this case means that the monitor has a modern video port that is capable of accepting audio signals as well and that the maker has actually enabled that support within the monitor. Not all do, so you would have to check the literature for yours.

Otherwise it's two cables which is kind of unfortunate in that the Air's audio and video outputs are on opposite sides of the case.
