I think what they mean to say is it would be easier to buy it at purchase to avoid what I had to do which some might find inconvenient.

Actually, you are charged for every service call after the 30 days! and I can guarantee you will call! Unless you are used to the iCloud and synching and such. I have covered all my equipment and I have not regretted the service. The fact that the computer recognizes your phone number and puts you through immediately is neat and nice! AppleCare and AppleCare+ are not just a physical warrantee, but a teaching guarantee as well. Don't scamp yourself on the coverage .

You're wrong, and we're also talking about two different things here. The base coverage on an iPad is a 1-year warranty and 90 days of support. AppleCare extends both of those things to two years. I was talking about the warranty before, and I stand by my idea that AppleCare isn't worth it for that. The support is another matter entirely, and I suppose it depends on whether you expect to need help figuring out basic usage more than 3 months post-purchase. Which leads us to...

My daughter is comfortable with tech. My mother is distinctly not. Yet she never called Apple and only rarely asked for my help with her iPad. Before you ask: No, none of us had prior experience with iOS devices.

I also buy it for peace of mind. I had to replace my IPhone 4, as my battery was prematurely dying. With AppleCare, once the Genius Bar genius verified the problem, I was handed a new IPhone. My data was transferred from ICloud, and I was on my way in 20 minutes.
If you owned your phone for over a year, you might have a similar experience, or you might not. The "new phone" would be most likely a refurb, I saw mine come out of a new sealed box. Or you might be told you need a battery service, which costs time ( your phone is sent out for repair), or charged for the service.
I don't mind spending the extra money for the great service I receive.
