So the European Telecommunications Standards Institute will meet in Osaka. I'm going to have to make some more revisions to the maps in my 1929 Encyclopedia Britannica.

One company fighting to stay relevant in the growing smartphone market and the other just fighting to stay alive. One or both hoping to make money from the new standard. Apple willing to go royalty-free would put pressure on the others. Can't wait to see how this plays out.

I still believe there is more to this story because I don't get the reason for this squabble. Maybe it's the reporting. Trying to read between the lines I see this as Apple vs Google (Motorola Mobility) and Microsoft (Nokia). RIM can't partner with Apple because of iOS and RIM is sitting in bed with Google/Android negotiating a possible consummation so I can see them in with Google and MS. The usual motivators for this type of behavior are money and/or pride (bragging rights being a big thing for Eric Schmidt and Steve Ballmer and of course Steve Jobs who was backing this design I guess and the CEO twins of RIM now since past). The money motivation is on the the non-Apple side if Apple won't change licensing fees on the front end but selling more phones is always Apple's plan.
So, I just don't see why we have this struggle which will presumably take on Sumo wrestling style when they meet in Osaka.

Great, the also-runs of the mobile industry, Nokia, RIM and Motorola are hampering the progress. But then, where was the last time Microsoft, RIM or Google looked forward... appart from looking forward to copying what Apple does....

I wish there were more details here. They are insulting each others work, but to what end. Why is Apple's proposal "inferior" might I ask. Necessary the Info!
