Works with the printer icon in the dock, too.

I have my office printer and my home printer in my dock, and both work fine for the drag and drop. (providing I am in the same place as that printer of course)

I don't have the time to put together a demo, but another option is to create a 'Service' that basically consists of opening the selected Finder item (Automator/Applescript would be fine) with the Printer 'application' and then triggering said service with a keyboard shortcut or by clicking Finder>Services>Print (or whatever it's called).

I just select a file and press Cmd+P
It also works.
