So how do we know that this checker is nothing more than another trojan? Who is Juan Leon and does MacWorld vouch for his checker app and his reputation? I would avoid downloading this unless and until a MacWorld editor like Breen or Snell give their blessing.

Are you at www.macworld.com? I think that means they vouch for it!

Although I had a slight hesitation on the validity of the Flashback checker, I proceeded with the understanding that MacWorld would not have given this suggestion without checking it further.
No infection here.
I'm still a little skeptical about the estimation of over 1/2 million infected Macs.
Remember that due diligence creates a Mac society of non-paranoia.
Good-Luck, my fellow comrades.

The source code is online. You can inspect it and build the project from scratch.

In fact, the developer even made the choice NOT to remove the malware, because that would require your administrator password, and he didn't want to worry users.

So funny. I just finished writing this for myself, grumbling because no other hotshot saved me the time.

Nice little utility--thanks to Juan for putting it together, and to Macworld for publicising it.

Thanks so much for the info about Flashback Checker. It worked fine and now I am relieved to know that my Mac doesn't have the Flashback trojan on it!

I'm somewhat skeptical as well. I think it would be worth an on-line poll to see how many users have actually detected an infection. So far, I have not come across a single one. (It almost seems like the mythical android tablets I keep hearing about but have never actually seen...!)

There are also web pages out there with the source for AppleScript you can paste in yourself, see the full code, and compile it yourself to run to do the same check
(pretty simple script really)

Going to create a second one to remove it if found, although as others have pointed out, it will require admin username & password

just an additional note that so far I still haven't found an infected system, have checked about 10 macs today alone brings my total up to about 50 in the past week or so.
