Great article Rob. I too live on keyboard commands. I'll take this opportunity to mention the use of Automator-Based services that can also be assigned keyboard shortcuts on a per application or global basis. As you mentioned, once users have created a new service in Automator, they can assign the new service a keyboard shortcut in the settings in the Keyboard system preference pane > Keyboard Shortcuts tab > Services list.

Great article, I too love shortcuts, and I have a question: on my old Powerbook, there was a great command to clear my screen of all windows to reveal the desktop. My new iMac doesn't have this and I've searched the Shortcut panel (which I find very complicated) and could not find this particular command. Is it there? Can I make one up? I miss it every day.

Go to "System Preferences" > "Mission Control" > "Hot Corners", select the corner you wish to use and set the command to "Desktop". By sweeping the cursor into that corner of the screen, all windows move off-screen, displaying your desktop; move the cursor back into the corner and your windows return.

Cheers

Great article. Did you post a copy of the pdf you made? I have been thinking of doing this for a while also.
I have not been able to find a way to type the symbols( Shift, Option , Comand, etc.) out to make a chart.
Is there a easy way to do this that i am just missing?
Thanks

Thanks for your time on this!

Is there a shortcut that slams my 'email address' onto a page/box entry, etc.?

There are some sites that won't accept Auto-Fill.

Love keyboard shortcuts and use them all the time. However, when will Apple get around to getting the arrow, Home, End, and pages up and down fully functional as they are in Windows?

The Magic Trackpad is more efficient than the Mouse but the use of keyboard shortcuts is far superior to using either the trackpad or mouse, if you do serious keyboarding or document creation. I collect and organize my "iMAC FAVORITE SHORTCUT KEYS" in an MSWord document formatted for double columns on each page. I now have some 170 favorite shortcut keys (grouped by software app) that nearly fill three pages. I keep a PDF copy of the Word document file on the right side of my desktop where it is immediately accessible with a double-click. However, 95% of the keyboard shortcuts I use on a daily basis I know from memory. NOW, if you are a touch typist and serious about efficiency, you should also switch to the DVORAK keyboard layout, which is conveniently available in OS X.

The only thing I miss from Windows is the discoverable shortcuts. In Windows the shortcut key for every menu is underlined. So for example to get to Tools->View->Zoom where T, V and Z are underlined (not always the first letter where there are duplicates), you just type Alt TVZ
Its very discoverable as the menus popup as soon as you hit the alt key and you can see the next shortcut.
I wish someone would produce a mac utility to do the same thing

How do I add a shortcut for a menu option that drops down an additional level?

I want a shortcut for iPhoto. Reveal in Finder. Reveal in Finder offers Modified File or Original File

Do I type:
Reveal in Finder/Modified File
Modified File
Reveal in Finder>Modified File
??

I have had no luck with any of these.

Suggestions?

Thanks for the help and great article.

Just kidding. Reveal in Finder/Modified File did the trick!
