Perhaps to avoid the App Store becoming clotted with nagware, crippleware or whatever. Seems a bit like throwing the baby out with the bathwater, though.

In-app purchase? But then potentially every application would be "free" with an additional charge to make it actually useful. That's not a good solution, either.

Perhaps, but let's not confuse "nagware" with time-limited trial versions. Nagware is a paid or free app that nags you to buy additional products or upgrades. Time-limited trial versions are disclosed from the beginning that they are time-limited, and that you are expected to buy the product for continued use. When the so-called nagging of trial versions becomes annoying, it is doing exactly what it's supposed to do: persuade you to pay for the software you are using! What I like about the "nag" feature in trial versions is that if you're merely using it to retrieve data or convert some legacy file on a one-time or very occasional basis, you can do it without the need of a pricey purchase. Just my perspective. :)

iWork and Aperture *are* "in-app" purchases. The app is Mac OS X.

I would like to believe the possibility that both apps are getting an update soon, so they're discouraging new users from tinkering with the old versions. Both are overdue for an update so it makes sense on a certain level. The question then becomes will they allow users to try demos of the new versions. I suspect the answer will be no.

Not surprised. Aperture 3 has languished with nary a hint of an update. The recently released Lightroom 4 has gotten mostly positive reviews and I suspect Apple has just decided to exit the space.

I too am hopeful that this is pointing to updates in the near future!

The Aperture free trial has been gone for some time. I was looking a couple of weeks ago considering replacing sluggish iPhoto. With no free trial, Aperture 3's obvious age, and Apple's nonexistent upgrade discount, I'll wait for Aperture 4 or until I forget my dislike of Adobe for having ruined PDF by adding FLASH and Java.

I predict this will sell a lot of copies of Lightroom. Especially at the new pricepoint.

If I had to guess, I'd say this is most likely connected to the installer certificate expiration last month.
